i just stumbled about a thing which irritated me yesterday. in one MGMAT cat one DS statement was
(2) The difference between the amount of the salesman's base salary and the amount of the commission was equal to 50 percent of the salesman's base salary last year.
i interpreted that base - commission is a positive value and i.e. base is higher. however, MGMAT explanation:
(2) INSUFFICIENT: Either s - c = .5s or c - s = .5s.
okay i thought than the meaning of difference between does not indicate which is bigger. today, i reviewed the GMAT Quant review and one DS statement stated
(2) The difference between the lenght and width of the garden is 60 feet.
GMAT explanation:
(2) This can be represented as l-w=60.
so here we are... my best guess is of course to trust OG since it is official. however, did anybody stumbled over this before? what are your thoughts, also trust OG i.e. difference between a and b means a-b? for me "difference between" can be interpreted in both ways...
thanks

MGAMT's explanation is correct. All it said was the difference between base salary and commission = 0.5(base salaray). Denoting the base salary as s and commission as c, s-c = 0.5s or c-s = 0.5s. There is no rule, statign that the commission must be less than the base salary. I offer you this example. A salesman earns $100 base salary, but 500% commission on total sales. If he makes $2000 total sales, then his commission is 500/100 * 2000 = $10,000. That's 100 times his base salary. But if a salesman earns $10000 base salary and his commssion is 0.1% of total sales. If he makes $10,000 total sales, his commssion is only $10. Theres' no fixed rule that his base salary must be greater than his commisssion.

GMAT explanation:
(2) This can be represented as l-w=60.
In this case OG is right. I gather that the question was mentioning a rectangular garden (I think I came across this OG question before). For a rectangular, the lenght must be greater than a width. So it already sets the limiting factor for you. IN this instance, l-w = 60.
