Hey everyone, I just wanted to share my experience taking the focus and the preparation (lack of) I did and see if you guys think if I should retake it sometime next year.
I am currently an undergrad senior, and in August, I realized that I wanted to apply to deferred MBA programs and I would have to take the GMAT. The schools I was looking at were mainly M7 + a few others. I took a cold test (Official Practice Test 1) on 8/15 and got 640, and booked my test for 11/15. I was going to study a few hours per week for 3 months but because I didn't end up getting a return offer, I spent the majority of my time applying to jobs instead and did 0 prep. On 11/15, I ended up getting a 670, even though my target score was 740+. I got my ESR and I noticed I actually did pretty good on everything, except for grammar, so I decided to just take the Focus Edition and see how it goes, so I booked it for 12/2. I was going to study for a bit at least, but again, school took over so I didn't even do a single question, expecting to retake again in the future. However, I ended up getting a 695 (Q81 V84 DI88) to my surprise, which is a score that I am happy with considering my lack of prep.
In terms of my actual testing experience, I would say it was a lot easier than expected. Prior to my exam day, I had a final project due, so I only got around 4 hours of sleep, and barely woke up in time for the test. Once I got to the test center, I had to use the bathroom but I decided against it since I thought it would help me during the test. I did Quant>Verbal>DI, since I knew I was most confident in Quant. For Quant, I finished with around 15 minutes left and I really had to use the bathroom so I didn't review my answers much. Ended up getting two questions wrong, and both were ones I spent 0.5 minutes on (according to the score report). I took my optional break. using the bathroom, and then I came back feeling much better for Verbal. Similar to Quant, I also finished with around 10-15 minutes left, but there were a few questions I was unsure about. I ended up guessing for a total of three questions, which was all wrong, in addition to two other questions that I got wrong. I didn't take my second break, and went straight to data insights, which I found harder than Verbal and Quant. I barely had any time left, and had to guess for a few questions because I didn't understand some of the wording for a few questions or I just didn't know how to do it. Ended up getting three questions wrong but still got a pretty good score.
My score breakdown was:
Q81 V84 DI88
Percentiles - 81,91,99
Quant - 2 questions wrong
Verbal - 5 questions wrong
DI - 3 questions wrong
All in all, I didn't think I did so well, and I feel like I could improve. Would it be worth it for me to retake the Focus next year (once I'm done with full-time recruiting), considering I'm an international ORM? Also, if I send my 695 score to schools, and I send a better score later on, would that hurt my application having a lower first attempt? I am hoping to get 725+ on the FE after I study for a bit, so I'd appreciate any advice you all have, and feel free to ask any questions!
