Hi Everyone,
I have been a long-time lurker on this forum, and it has helped me a lot with my preparation so I am writing this debrief to give back to the GMATClub community. I hope users find this helpful.
I am elated to share that I have scored a 775 on the GMAT Focus. This is my second attempt at the GMAT. My first attempt was at the Classic version in 2022 (740, Q49 V41).
I felt that I did not score to my potential on the first attempt and hence I decided to give it a second try this year. I started my preparation in April and took the test in July. While the format changed, I already had a good sense of the algorithm and the questions. Sentence correction was my weakness on the Classic so I was happy to see that go

GMAT prep can become expensive quickly with so many different options out there. For folks looking to do this on a limited budget, my GMAT Focus prep was completely free of cost. I will outline the resources I used below. Please keep in mind that I have a quant background so the GMAT quant was not a big issue for me. I needed support for verbal and DI (since that is a new section).
For Verbal and DI concepts:
1. GMATNinja's YouTube channel is awesome. His videos are a goldmine of resources for anyone looking to clear their concepts. The key aspect to master for a great GMAT score is to develop a structured process to answer each question. His videos helped me develop this structure and increased my accuracy to a great extent. I would recommend everyone to check out the content made by Charles and his team, they are amazing!
2. I attended some of the free weekend webinars hosted by eGMAT. These provide a good starting point for people beginning their GMAT prep (and you get to do a few questions live with the expert, which always helps)
3. Questions: Solve as many questions as you can. In addition to solving questions, one thing that helped immensely was to look at the expert answers on GMATClub. The experts on GMATClub do a great job at outlining their thought processes as they go about the question and also write detailed explanations on why the other options are incorrect.
4. In the last week of my prep I used the TTP trial to revise key concepts. The course is well-structured and will surely benefit people who want to learn concepts from scratch. I mainly used some Verbal lessons and the questions.
On questions and strategy:
1. Use the GMATClub question banks. This was the main source for my practice. I filtered on OG and LSAT questions for Verbal, and OG questions for DI. GMATClub questions are more than enough practice and provide access to high-quality questions. I would recommend solving questions only from OG and reputed providers because low-quality questions can really damage your self-confidence (and self-confidence is key for this test!)
2. I also used the Scholarinium trial and GMAT free questions to create custom quizzes. These were a limited set but helpful nonetheless.
3. Use the official mocks judiciously. Analyze each attempt carefully and learn from it. I realised early that DI was going to be a time management game and hence was prepared to let some questions go if it is taking a lot of time and I am not able to figure it out.
I gave the two free mocks twice each (resetting once still gives you a good enough attempt). I also attempted the eGMAT free mock and the GMATClub sectional mocks on public holidays (when they are free).
The mocks helped me fix my section order (Quant -> DI -> Break -> Verbal). Here are my scores:
Official mock 1 (fresh attempt with one-week prep and understanding of test algo): 695
Official mock 2 (one month into prep): 715
eGMAT mock 1 (2 months into prep): 705 (I felt this was tougher than the official mocks, and faced a severe time crunch in DI)
Official mock 1 (reset, 2.5 months into prep): 805 (I couldn't believe my score, I feel some repeated questions are still a big advantage and result in an inflated score)
Official mock 2 (reset, 1 week before the exam): 765 (I thought this was an inflated score too, because of 2-3 repeated questions in verbal)
The real exam felt slightly tougher compared to the official mocks. I was nervous at the start and spent some time checking my calculations in the initial part of the Quant section. The GMAT algorithm has a severe score penalty if you get the initial easier questions wrong. I eased into the exam after the first 5-7 questions and was mostly smooth until a tricky P&L question cost me a lot of time. I am good at quant and used to have 5-10 minutes left to review my questions in the mocks. This wasn't the case in the real attempt. I had around 3 minutes to review my questions, which was still good enough to review my work. I did not make any changes to my responses in this section.
The DI section is always tight in terms of time. Fortunately, I got only one Multi-Source Reasoning set. I had around 1.5 minutes at the end. I used the time to look at 5-6 questions, which all seemed right to me so I made no changes to this one as well.
I took a break after the DI section, ate a protein bar and came back. I was confident that I had done enough to get a decent score, and I wanted to finish strong.
The verbal section was tricky. I encountered 3-4 questions where two options seemed close. Here GMATNinja's concepts and reading expert responses helped. I was able to eliminate the close but incorrect options due to the structured reasoning process. The key is to focus on what the argument asks about. Similarly in RC, understanding what the author wants to say should be the main focus. Unfortunately, the close options took up significant time and I faced a situation where I had 5 questions and 4.5 minutes on the clock.
I also realised that I had marked question #4 incorrectly after some time and wanted to have at least 10-15 seconds to change that one.
I had to deviate from my structure to answer these quickly, as leaving questions unanswered is another scorekiller. I got 3 questions right and 2 wrong due to the time crunch. These were the only 2 wrong in verbal as I was able to go back and change question #4 to the correct option.
Overall, I got 1 question wrong in DI and 2 questions wrong in Verbal. I wonder what my score could have been if I had enough time in Verbal to do the last 5 questions in a structured manner!
Happy to answer any questions from the community! Also mods please let me know if I need to verify my score somewhere.
Cheers
