As I spent the last 4 months in a quest to get a higher GMAT score, I would love to share my experience with this wonderful community which was an impetus behind my success!
To start off with some background, as a working professional in management consulting, I decided to take a break from work and soley focus on my GMAT preperation. I went through most of the open source material available, OG's and focused on theory material in each of the 3 sections (Quant, Verbal & Data). My preparations went from bad to worse in the inital set of mocks ranging from 575 to 525. Stretching through the next couple of weeks and concentrating on 600-700 problems only,
I ended with a 635 as my first official attempt. (Q-82, V-81, DI-81)After a brief break and getting back to work, I was able to reach peak levels with my Quant, easily solving 700+ sums and getting good scores in GMATClub Sectional tests. But on the downside, my verbal expertise strangely came to an all time low. End of 1st Month, I still went ahead with an official mock to test my preparation and to no surprises there, ended with a 595....
Months 2&3 was a period of constantly pushing myself, barely scraping a few hours here and there alongside an intense work schedule and prearations werent really peaking as far as my performances were concerned. I pushed through spending extra hours on weekends, with a motive on just doing question bank after question bank via
GMAT club search tags feature (
Extremely underrated feature for anyone who isnt aware).
As the final month (Month 4) set in, I was able to get a 2-week break to solely focus on the exam and give it all I got once and for all. What I had learnt is that I needed uninterrupted 2-3 hours per day to get through question banks and prepare myself mentally for any sort of distractions without losing my rhythm.
I went from looking at this from an exam testing my acadamic acumen to a mental endurance test as the key to success!Spent the first week back in solving question banks and was feeling very good about my Quant and Verbal preperations reaching 83+ in GMATClub sectional tests. I took a mock 5 days later , in the morning(which was my initial plan on taking the exam) and ended up getting a 605 in the mocks......
Devestated, I took a break over the weekend, completely away from GMAT and restarted the next monday.
This time, with a lot of thought I made
2 major changes -
1. Swaped my exam pattern from Q-V-DI to Verbal-Quant-DI
2. Changed exam timing from morning to evening
These major changes gave me an inherent boost and excitement to experiment my change in strategy and it worked wonders!
Took a mock 3 days later, got to a 655 level in the mocks an booked an exam slot 3 days later (in the evening slot ofc)
Over the 3 days, took it easy, did mocks all 3 days getting scores in the range of 655-675 which gave me the ultimate boost.
During the last mock, I started losing touch over quant by doing rookie mistakes like spending too much time over a problem and its cascading effects.
I'm glad I faced these a day earlier and was prepared for this come the day of the exam.
On exam day, did the same thing as I had done the past 3 days and went to my exam center a little earlier and luckily they had a slot to start early.
As I finished my last DI question, and saw my
final score of 695 (Q-86, V-82, DI-85) , I was overjoyed! All the hustle had finally paid off.
A big thank you to
bb Bunuel KarishmaB chetan2u ScottTargetTestPrep and all the other moderators on the forum for providing answers, posting questions and especially the theory material that went a long way in my preparation.
For anyone who is on this very journey, I hope this experience can help you reach your goals!
