Hi Simran9,

Regarding prep courses, in addition to seeking advice in this thread, take a look at the GMAT Club reviews for the best quant and verbal courses, and also read through some GMAT success stories to see what materials have worked well for other test-takers.

Hello All,

I am studying GMAT for the first time. Its just been a week since i picked up GMAT.

I would like to get some guidance on which books to refer and what study plan to follow.

Additionally do I need to take up coaching classes for GMAT or self study is possible? If coaching is required which tution providers are good?

Thanks
Simran

Hi Simran9

Start by taking an official mock to see where you stand. Once you do that, start studying the concepts and the methodology of each topic. Only after you are done with these two, you have to move to practicing questions of that topic (You can use the official guides at this stage). GMAT is not a typical test in which just the conceptual knowledge is tested. It tests your application skills along with the conceptual knowledge. So, without learning the right methodology to solve questions, no matter how many questions you practice, your score will most likely remain stagnant. Make sure to focus more on the methodology during your preparation.

The right way to prepare for GMAT:

You can go through the articles below to understand the right way to prepare for GMAT.

How to start your GMAT Preparation?

How to effectively plan your studies for GMAT?

How to score 700+ on GMAT

I would suggest you to choose a resource which can help you with:

  • Concepts
  • Methodology (Most important)
  • Standard questions
  • Their detailed solutions
  • Study plan (You may check out the video below)
  • Mentorship support and Feedback

Preparing for GMAT is already a tedious task and you wouldn't want to spend the time you have in planning what to study and sorting out things. Having a clear idea of what to study on a day will make life easy for you. So, choose a resource which can provide you with a study plan.

Self-Prep Vs. Online Course – Which one is better?

The best thing to do would be to check out the free trials of the online courses out there and choose the one which suits you the most. But make sure you choose the one which can help you with the above factors. You can check out the below article to know more about the factors to consider while evaluating an online course.

Key factors to consider while evaluating an online course

And I would suggest you to check out the free trial of GMATWhiz before taking a decision. It provides an AI powered learning platform that comes with a comprehensive amount of content and an integrated study plan that is completely personalized for you. Furthermore, the platform provides real time insights on your performance, highlighting your strengths and weaknesses while providing a road map to improvement.
