GMAT is just a filter. Stanford requires much more than a high GMAT score

Lets assume I have everything else what it takes to get to Stanford. The question at hand is GMAT.

Thanks

You'll always feel like you could do more to be ready. I wrote an article on that very topic a while back:

https://www.gmathacks.com/study-tips/wil ... -gmat.html

If you're scoring 700+ on GMAT Prep, you're as likely as not to replicate that on the real thing. It's no guarantee, but it's a very rare person who I would say is "guaranteed" a 700 on any given day.

On another note, I really doubt you need a 740+ to be competitive anywhere. Admissions consultants aren't awarding points based on being a 98th %ile instead of a 95th %ile. You probably know better than I do what Stanford's most recent stats are, but in order for your assertion to be true, the median would have to be 750+.

Thanks a lot,

This is the kind of response I was looking for. In my case, I went ahead with a great deal optimism (or over-confidence) during my first attempt and got my fingers burnt with a lower than expected score.

Now I know that I still need to master coordinate geometry, probability and few more verbal concepts after taking 4-5 tests and I exactly know which areas are producing or have produced errors for me in the practice tests.

I have re-scheduled the text to 1Novemver, allowing myself a little more practice - I just don't want to take any chances and the general feedback that I have got from people is that good GMAT is essential for a scholarship despite all those speeches that GMAT is just one factor.

Thanks for your wonderful reply.

i would just take the test if i were you.

it's really tough if not impossible to virtually guarantee a Q50. i think most people who actually score a Q50 were actually scoring in the range of Q48-51 so on the actual day, there will be a little bit of variation.

in verbal, if you can score a 40 now, that's pretty good. a score of Q48 and V40 is like 700 or 710 so that's good. if you get a little bit of luck on your side and score a Q49 or A50 and V40 or V41, you'll be in the 730-740 range.
