As long as you apply before the score expires, you should be fine. Therefore, even if you decide to apply R2 in 2026, as long as you submit on or before December 2026 you should be fine. Most of the R2 applications are due by the first few days in January so it's not like you are cutting your window short by applying by December.

If you are really concerned, you have a few options:

(1) You can take the exam in January 2022 rather than December 2021. That would solve nearly all of your problems as far as the timeline for most processes for the 2026 - 2027 season.

(2) Plan to apply to all of your schools by R1 2021. That way there is zero ambiguity. Since you are already planning in advance, you can definitely submit more than the average number of applications, which is around 3-4 per round.

Obviously if things change and you are planning to amass more than 4 years of work experience, then you'd have an issue with this test score.

If you stick to the plan you have laid out or the two options I have listed, you should not have a problem.
