Target date for the real thing is June 2015.

This is a soft date and will change if I start PT'ing in the 770-800 range.

Basic plan of attack:

Quant

MGMAT Quant Guides
Bunuells Math
GMAT Club Quant Book
OG Guides
Flash Cards that I will drop into anki

Verbal

MGMAT Verbal Guides
GMAT Club Verbal Book
Powerscore LSAT LR book
OG Guides

GMAT club threads will also likely be heavily utilized.

The local library is full of LSAT LR books so I will be using those eventually and then assessing their usefulness.

The basic plan for practice tests will be to take one every time I finish a book/Guide or every 50hrs of focused study and practice.

Once I PT relatively close to 800, I'll schedule the test and focus on building speed/endurance by utilizing different density techniques for taking timed practice tests ending with the GMAT prep tests.

Principle of specificity! Think of it as the 30 mile training run in the build up to a marathon.

I look forward to posting regularly and using this space to be as helpful to others as this board has been to me during my lurking.

So the phases to my GMAT journey will be:

Basebuilding
Strength/Speed
Peaking
Game day

Work life got in the way, but back to the grind and the 800 goal.

For now I'll update this once per week.

Started reading through the MGMAT books yesterday to get a feel for the problem types and the way the questions are built.

I scored a 96% on GRE verbal several years ago. This was a cold take with no prep. The Masters program I entered did not care about the Quant score so I have no idea what that was anymore.

A few starting points for the way I think about learning a language, an instrument, subject, or a test are attached.

They are on various subjects but have helped structure the way I think about mastering a skill.

In short density training, sustainable volume over a long period of time, makes geniuses of all of us.

Speaking of: The Genius in all of Us is a good read.

This will be a very informal log, designed to capture my own progress and allow a space to reflect and engage with others on the same journey.

I will be applying in the fall of 2017 for entrance in fall of 2018. So...plenty of time.

Hi Roosterbooster,

I think that it's a good idea that you plan to post your progress here - doing so should help you to more efficiently deal with any challenges that you face during your studies and the process should keep focused on your goal.

As far as the overall goal is concerned, I'd like to know a bit more about your plans:

1) Do you know which Schools you plan to apply to?
2) Are you comfortable with the idea that you don't "need" an 800 to get into those Schools?

Rich,

Stanford would be the dream. Depending on GMAT score I'll align my targets/reaches/safety spread from there.

I'm absolutely comfortable with a sub-800. That's a losing proposition otherwise.

I think there is value in preparing like you are purposefully chasing perfection while maintaining managed expectations of the eventual outcome.

Trying to be perfect brings out the sensitivity to the smallest detail that otherwise may be overlooked if you are resigned to not being perfect. I can reason with myself that small details are not important if I know that I prepared to be less than perfect anyway.

I hope that's more clearly related than I made it seem!

Another way to say it. If I am intentionally preparing to be less than perfect, I am intentionally preparing to miss questions.
