HI adityaab14,

Regarding resources, in addition to seeking advice in this thread, take a look at the GMAT Club reviews for the best quant and verbal courses, and also read through some GMAT success stories to see what materials have worked well for other test-takers.

You also may find it helpful to read this article about how to score a 700+ on the GMAT.

Good luck!

Any suggestions, feedbacks and advices are well appreciated and taken in a completely positive outlook.

One thing to consider is regularly reading articles from the Economist. For Quant, trying to understand the underlying concepts as opposed to only the formulas can be helpful. Maybe play around, for example, with some small numbers to see how exponents and remainders work.

Hi adityaab14,

Many GMATers are unhappy with their initial practice scores, but you really shouldn't be. That 400 is just a measure of your skills right now - and you'll improve on that result over time as you learn more about the content, Tactics and little 'secrets' of the Exam. Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) What study materials do you currently have access to? What “brand” of CAT/mock was this first Exam?
2) What were the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for this CAT/mock? Did you have to rush to finish any of the sections (and/or did you leave any questions unanswered?
3) What is your overall goal score?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi All,

I recently researched about how to prepare and go about the exam structure and decided that I should take a mock test just to acquaint myself with the format.
For a background, It has been a long time since I applied the the quant concepts and I am a non-native English speaker. My score in the mock test was 400.
Though the test was just to judge the pattern, the score demotivated me for my further preparation.
Can I get some advice on should I start preparing on my own? or should I take a self paced/online classroom coaching?
Any suggestions, feedbacks and advices are well appreciated and taken in a completely positive outlook.

Thanks!
Hi adityaab14,

You've already received some great responses.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I've seen initial practice test scores lower than yours. The thing about these initial scores is that they may not mean anything. They're useful in the sense that they give us an idea of where we are right now and they help us become more familiar with the test, but they may not be very representative of our final score.

Hi adityaab14,

Do not take this score too seriously as you haven’t prepared anything yet. The only objective of this should be to understand the kind of questions that you’ll be tested on.

You can go through this article to understand the right way to prepare for GMAT.

https://www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/202 ... L6b4hafmwA

Let me share my two cents as a non-native speaker of English. To master Verbal, the biggest hurdle non-native speakers face is following a methodical approach to solve questions. We need special emphasis on understanding the meaning of the arguments and passages. Most books won't help you learn that as they mostly focus on teaching the concepts. As GMAT is an adaptive test, I suggest you to go with an online course specially the one that focuses on teaching a methodical approach as it helps you take adaptive quizzes and provides you all the content on a single platform. Another benefit of online courses is that they mostly teach through videos which helps you to retain stuff better. Feel free to get in touch if you've any follow-up questions.

The best way to choose an online course is to check out the free trials of the courses out there and then choose the one which suits you the most. But make sure to choose the course which can help you with not only the concepts but also the application of concepts. And it would be even better if the course can help you with the study plan as it will help you be clear of what to study on any given day. You can check out the free trial of GMATWhiz and take a decision. It is a personalized course that comes with an integrated study plan and adapts the content in real-time on basis of your performance.

And I can definitely help you with the study strategy. GMAT is a test which focuses on application of concepts. So, you need to make sure that you learn not only the concepts but also their application. Please schedule a call with me using the link below so that I can guide you in a better way.
