Hey there everyone.
So I'm wondering if the community can help me as far as a study plan. I have been granted leave from work to start the process of studying for the GMAT which I intend to take in the next 3-4 months. Seeing as I will have all day to practice and study, I was wondering what the correct approach should be. Let me start off by giving you my profile, and what I look to obtain.
UnderGrad GPA: 2.5
Major : Communications
Graduation: 2012
School: Cal State Northridge
Work Experience : 10 years.
Target GMAT: 750+
Target Schools: Columbia, NYU
Current Age:26
I'm sure all of you are wondering, "wow this kid is crazy to think he will enter one of these schools with that degree and gpa." Before we all jump the gun, I want to explain the situation and briefly touch the surface of the reasoning behind it.
So growing up I had dealt with an extreme amount of adversity, being diagnosed with ADD/ADHD at a very young age of 5. I was one of the first test subject at UCLA Medical center on the side effects for different medications, and was kept on site at 5 for about two weeks, to do testing and analysis reports on the effects. After I started taking medication, I was continuously bullied and made fun for my extreme weight gain, and other effects that came from the side effects of the medication that I was taking. This made me lash out, and when I was 14 I was sent away for behavioral issues, which I overcame through treatment and finding a passion (music which will be later explained). I was leaned off the medication and was discharged a year later.
So when I was 16 I was brought into the music industry, and started professionally working on my own in it at around the age of 18. I was then signed to multiple major label recording companies as an artist by the time I was 20. This brought my studies to a standstill, and it shows in my undergrad transcripts with W's and gaps in attendance. It also hindered my ability to focus in some classes which was due to the extensive deadlines, and time allocated it required at a young age. I was given an opportunity to follow a dream, and I got very close. I was able to work with some major high profile individuals, and as well I was credited (Production, Writing, Singing) on numerous high profile projects (movies, music). These can be viewed through IMDB, Discog, and as well Wiki ( I know not the best reliable source).
Which leads me to the GPA.
This affected my GPA at the community college I was attending, as well the school I later transferred to. In my last year of college I transferred to CSUN. Due to me thinking that I was getting old, I was so adamant about completing my 2 years in one year that I found ways for the committee to approve the extra units necessary to be granted to achieve wanted. Thus In turn making my way to taking 60 Units in 1 year, which drastically affected my GPA. This was due to traveling throughout the world, and working full time while completing this, and in no one am I saying this is an excuse for the drop in my GPA. What I am saying is, that it should be something to think about within the overall candidacy and profile. My theory is that if I actually devoted the time to my collegiate studies, etc. It would have had a drastically different outcome. It was a decision that I made as a kid, and one that I wish I could go back and change, but I can't. Originally I was an Accounting major, but I switched due to the time I needed to devote to it. I tried to take short cuts, and in the end the only person I affected was myself. I did gained valuable assets with work experience, but it affected my over collegiate studies which I am well aware of.
Fast forward to after graduation.
So I graduated and started realizing that my time was limited, and that I actually wanted to do something in finance, and business. A little to late to back track now, so I started trying to find ways to break into the industry. Unfortunately I wasn't successful to break into the field, and I was offered a job through our college job fair as a Marketing associate in the health field. I went ahead and took it, as I thought maybe I could build my resume outside of the industry and find my way into the field I want to be in through a top B School. I was then offered a position through another firm (Legal) after a year and half with the company I was at. I went on to take it, and I've been working for them now for about two years. Earlier this year, they went on to relocate me to NYC. That's where I am currently, and where I wanted to be all along.
So back to the matter at hand.
Now It's about to be June, and they have granted me time off to focus on studying for the GMAT. They have given me a 4 month window to allocate the necessary time to study, and complete the GMAT. As I want to be in banking so bad, It's crucial to find a way into those 2 schools. I'm wondering if the community can help me with a day to day/ or week to week study plan to achieve this.I haven't done math in years which would probably be a huge uphill battle, and I am open to taking a course but wanted the communities feedback on them.
What I want.
The J Term and Regular early decision rounds for those two schools I have listed above, have listed their deadlines in October. My goal and what I truly want is to be accepted into the J Term, but I might be up against some major competition. I think my work experience is probably the one thing that stands out the most, and shows my diversity due to the credits I have in the industry and what I have done. I also think my adversity as a child and growing up achieving things through tough battles shows my ceiling has not been reached. I think my GPA was affected majorly from my outside interferences, but I feel confident that If I was devoting my time completely to school It would have been drastically different. But that is all speculation, and facts are facts. I know I will have some convincing to do, but the first things first which is tackling the major hurdle. The GMAT.
This is something that I want so bad, and will be willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. Any feedback what so ever will be greatly appreciated. As I know I'm looking at a huge uphill battle, I am not worried about the hill. Like all the other battles and uphill climbs I've made in my life this is just another which I will accomplish. What I'm hoping is for the community to help me find my way to accomplishing this. I will document my progress as well through a post here, and would love for any and all help I can get. Once again I am asking for the help to find my way there as it is a dream I want to accomplish.
Thanks again for reading this, and I hope some of you can help me.
