I've been preparing for the GMAT for months, pouring countless hours into studying and practicing. When the big day finally arrived, I was filled with a mix of excitement and anticipation. I had booked my exam at the Pearson Professional Centers in Surat, Gujarat, India, on August 24, 2024, at 10:30 AM.
The first two sections of the exam went smoothly. I felt confident and focused. Just as I was about to start the third section, Disaster struck. As I began the Data Interpretation (DI) section, a series of loud drilling noises began emanating from the floor below. Despite wearing noise-canceling headphones, the vibrations were so strong that they were impossible to ignore.
The timing couldn't have been worse. This was the final section of the exam, and I was already fatigued. The noise made it nearly impossible to concentrate. I considered bringing the issue to the attention of the test coordinator, but I didn't want to risk losing any time. Instead, I decided to focus on finishing the exam as best I could.
After completing the exam, I approached the test coordinator and explained the disruption caused by the drilling noise. To my surprise, she acknowledged that the maintenance work was unscheduled and that she would file an incident report. I also tried to contact GMAC/Pearson VUE directly, but their response was a standard, generic apology that didn't address the specific issue I faced.
This was their response:
Quote:
We are sorry to hear that you were disrupted by noise within the testing room when taking your GMAT exam.
As per the complaint you submitted, we have conducted an investigation with the test center. We are sorry to hear about the experience you faced during your exam on 08/24/2024 at 10:30 AM. At our testing centers, there are some distractions we are unable to prevent as they are out of our control. Some of those distractions may include but are not limited to, individuals entering and exiting the testing room, coughing, speaking due to communicating with the test administrator, typing, or other noises associated with taking an exam & other candidates. Pearson VUE is not able to offer a fully silent exam environment, there will always be a level of background noise from activity within the test center.
As per the test Center, Earplugs & Noise cancellation headphones were also provided by the TA.
We have checked with the site and they have stated that there were no complaints from other candidates on the day about noise distraction and we have no other cases logged from this site on the day relating to noise.
(They said We have checked with the site and they have stated that there were no complaints from other candidates, but I was the only candidate in the Test center when this happened. And the test coordinator clearly mentioned the noises were unplanned and were loud enough.)
Determined to improve my score, I reattempted the GMAT after the mandatory 16-day cool-down period on September 20, 2024. This time again, the first two sections went well, but during the DI section, the screen froze. The Test Coordinator tried to reconnect, but the issue persisted due to a connection problem. I had to abandon the exam and I was informed that I would need to wait for the issue to be resolved before rescheduling. The Test Coordinator informed me that she would raise the ticket by tomorrow morning since the test center was closing for that day and there was no connection. Next morning she called informing that the connectivity issue still persists and that she would inform by afternoon. Having received no calls till afternoon, I visited the Test center. She said she was going to go home and file the case since the center was still facing the connection issue. (If she could do it from home, Why was it not done on Friday itself.?)
Since it was a Saturday, Pearson Vue`s call centers were unavailable. I had to wait until Monday to reschedule. But there was a catch – my abandoned exam needed to be released from the center (via "RMA") before I could schedule another test. Sunday morning, I received a call confirming the test's release, but I still couldn't reschedule.
On Monday, I tried to reschedule, only to be told that the case wasn't closed, and I had to wait. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, on Wednesday (September 25), I received an email from Pearson Vue`s stating I could reschedule with a free reschedule option.
However, when I called customer support (after a 2-hour call as they tried to get the "permissions to reschedule from their side"), I was informed that They weren't able to reschedule before the cool-down period. I was given two options: reschedule after the period or create another ticket to waive it off. I don't know when will this get resolved, but my R1 applications are screwed already.
Throughout this entire ordeal, I felt frustrated, helpless, and disheartened. The GMAT is already a stressful experience, but the technical glitches and lack of support from Pearson VUE made it even more challenging. I hope my experience can shed light on the issues faced by other test-takers and encourage GMAC/Pearson Vue to improve their testing procedures and customer service.
My experience with the GMAT has been a harrowing reminder that test-takers are often left to fend for themselves. Despite the high stakes of the exam, Pearson VUE and GMAC seem more concerned with maintaining their processes than ensuring a fair and supportive experience for candidates. GMAC's/Pearson Vue`s inconsistent testing environment, unhelpful customer support, and rigid policies are frustrating. Two consecutive experiences at the same test center raise questions about their quality control and commitment to fairness.
It's disheartening to realize that when faced with technical glitches or unforeseen circumstances, test-takers are often left to navigate the system alone. The lack of timely assistance and understanding from the testing organizations can add to the already significant stress of preparing for and taking the GMAT.
I urge my fellow test-takers to be prepared for potential challenges and to advocate for themselves if they encounter any issues. Don't hesitate to escalate complaints and seek assistance whenever necessary. Remember, your exam is a crucial step in your academic or professional journey, and it's essential to prioritize your well-being throughout the process.
