GMAT OG 2021 or older?

Question

Hello! I am aspiring to appear for GMAT in about 3-4 months. Want to start the prep with GMAT Original Guides. Can I purchase 2018 or 2019 OGs (new ones, since the online access code in the used ones is usually "used') instead of 2021 edition? I know I can, since the variance is not too much, but would online access code of older versions still work or would it be expired?

I will suggest Go For newer edition. 
Old OGs are available online plus you can practice OG questions here on GC practice section. 
Don't know whether Old OG access code will be working or not, but in case they didn't and you already purchased that, that will be of no use. 
Its better to invest on New OG, if you are planning to buy that.

I bought OG 2020 and the online access code works, so the older one might work, but buying a newer one would be a good idea.

Buying newer one is better... it has a few more questions in the book.

However, the 2020 OG access works. ? I have activated one a while ago. I think the last few years codes work. At the same time the online practice system at Wiley is not very helpful so I am not sure that I would use it as my decision point. (Let me know if you disagree. Perhaps people have found a better way to use it).

Hi Lostgmattaker,

The OG books are great sources for practice questions - so purchasing one of the recent Official Guides (even going back several years) would be a good idea. That having been said, those books are not designed to teach you Tactics, patterns or the little 'secrets' behind the GMAT - for those, you'll need Course-oriented materials. Any NEW version of the main Official Guide will include an online access code so that you can access some additional practice materials through the Wiley website (and you can purchase those books at a number of different online sources, such as Amazon.com). With a USED copy, there's a reasonable chance that the original purchaser has already used the online access (so you would not be able to use it).

Since it sounds like you're just beginning your studies, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can take 2 for free at www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a little studying first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the basic content and question types, then that's okay - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. That score will give us a good sense of your natural strengths and weaknesses and will help provide a basis for comparison as you continue to study. A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.
