Hi Everyone,
I took the GMAT online and scored 585. To give you some context: I first took the test in October 2022 (before the Focus Edition) and scored 680, which I was happy with at the time. I had spent around 4 months studying prior to me taking first time. Life then got in the way, and I didn’t start studying seriously again until early 2023. I retook the test in July 2023 and improved by 10 points, scoring 690. Encouraged by this progress, I decided to commit myself fully to studying, dedicating 5+ hours a day.
On August 24, 2024, I took the Focus Edition of the GMAT for the first time and scored 625. I was disappointed with the result, so I spent the next two months intensifying my study efforts even further. Yet, on my most recent attempt, I scored a 585.
I’m struggling to understand how my score could drop so significantly—from 680 to 585—despite maintaining a consistent, focused study routine. I wouldn't even say struggling, it's honestly maddening. I've spent so much time yet I'm getting worse??? Never experienced this level of frustration and desperation to figure out what is going wrong. Over the past few months, I’ve completed all six GMAT official practice tests, reviewed every quant section from TTP, and worked through many GMATClub questions. I’ve also invested in a tutor through Wyzant for additional support.
I felt confident in the quant section, and I’m at a loss as to why my score has decreased despite putting in so much time and effort. I would really appreciate the opportunity to review specific questions from my test to understand where I went wrong and how I can adjust my strategy moving forward, or if anyone else has seen or experienced this phenomen where I start out strong with 680 and my score gets worse the more time I invest into getting better? How is that even possible? Would appreciate any input anyone has. Was trying to raise my score from 680 to a 710 but seems a bit more unrealistic now that I'm starting at 585. Super lost and would appreciate anything.

What were your section scores (including on some of your recent official mocks)? When you get your score report, try looking over it while replaying what happened during the exam. Perhaps there are a few questions you may have made a careless error on (e.g. Q1 Quant). You could also share the score report here for people to provide a few suggestions regarding next steps.

appreciate the response. Score is still unofficial and 'pending'. I had a score of (690 pre focus) =~675 focus equivalent in July 2022. Even with careless errors, how has my score degraded from 675->625->585.
I don't have breakout of V, Quant, and DI score/percentile breakout but here is my score timeline
*Official test - pre-focus (OG) (10/29/2022): 690
-Mock 1 FE: 595
-Mock 2 FE: 635
*official test FE (8/24/2024): 625
-Mock 3 FE: 675
-Mock 4 FE: 665
-Mock 5 FE: 675
*official test FE (11/30/2024): 585
This official test was lower than my first mock FE. How is that possible (100 of hours went into studying between 8/24 test and 11/30 test. I feel my foundations are there and I can score 695 official, but seemed more realistic when practice tests were in 675 range. Has anyone seen this phenomena where there is a huge drop off? I felt really good going through quant and had like 6 mins to spare. Answered every question without having to guess (whether I calc wrong answer I'm not sure). I'm just in desperate need of some help and answers!
