I also realized, about halfway through the exam, that I’d totally overlooked probably one of the main reasons GMAC decided to go with this online whiteboard vs. letting us do our scratch work on paper. It is a security reason, but it’s a different one than I’d been thinking before.

I spent 99% of my test time looking directly at the screen, since everything I needed was there—both the problem and my scratch work. The only time I looked away for more than a second was when I was rolling my neck around or massaging my shoulders. The AI software that’s monitoring us while we take the exam is therefore easily going to catch someone who’s spending a lot of time looking down or off to the side at notes that they’re not supposed to have in front of them.

While it’s extremely annoying to have such a short time to learn how to use this online whiteboard, another part of me does appreciate that the testing experience is this secure. So I’m very torn on this issue. I want to just pick up a pen and write. But I’d hate for someone to take the exam now and try to use the scores in 2 years, only to have the schools discount exams taken at home because there were security breaches reported in the interim. Given the way this setup keeps your eyes on screen all the time, I think that scenario is a lot less likely to happen for the GMAT.

Such measure cannot prevent people (including those working for unscrupulous test prep companies) from capturing questions to help other test takers cheat. Simply put, at home test cannot protect the integrity of test questions.

Unless there is some kind of a tool you are implying one would use to capture questions, this experience is no less secure than at a test prep center.... and here you can only take it once....

Did you take the GMAT Online on Mac or PC?
Mac.

"We both took the test on 15-inch Macbook Pros; Eric’s was the new version (oversized trackpad and touch bar) while mine was old school (regular trackpad, no touch bar)."
Great, thank you. I'm also a Mac user, and I know the GMAT Online has already been advertised by GMAC as Mac compatible, but it's always nice to see proof of concept first.

I also took the At-Home GRE on my Macbook Air, but I had to install Windows beforehand.

For example, a test taker can install a hidden camera within smoke detector (or a spy camera that disguises itself as a smoke detector). The captured questions will be used to help others cheat.

In the test center, it will be extremely difficult to replicate such schemes.

Because allowing others to cheat is unfair to honest test takers, me included & because GMAC's claim that Home editions are as secure as regularly scheduled tests is preposterous and should be debunked.

I share your concerns but I don’t think it is as easy or realistic... you have a lot of assumptions and a lot of logistical issues in your use case of hidden cameras.

Issue 1: Most of small camera are very small and very cheap and will not be able to capture text or focus on screen. Not unless it is a $50,000 hidden camera. The resolution and focus will be insufficient and incapable of capturing text from that distance. You will need a much bigger camera to capture text.

Issue 2: with less than two months, how many people can really take advantage of any kind of cheating? How would you find out about it In a way that GMAC would not? I One hand, someone can advertise those questions or services but to make use of it, they only have six or seven weeks. So they either capture a very small audience or they risk of getting busted by GMAC. I’m also confident that one of the customers will report them to GMAC as well

This cheating scary plan may benefit a total of five people. That’s a lot of effort for a very very small group ... if they invest a bunch of money into logistics and pull it off but it will hardly make a difference and will take quite a bit of an investment to get a score which is no longer even required to get into a business school....

I don’t think this will be worth it but I think there will be a few scams in part based on this conspiracy theory. People will claim that they have official questions and when they get the money, they will send some random SAT stuff to a person who pays $100 or 500 to them. When the person realizes that they got duped, they have no recourse. They can’t complain to GMAC since they try to cheat on the exam or go to the police :-) it’s a perfect scam and those who go for it deserve to be scammed...

One aspect of today's online exam that I'm particularly excited about is getting a chance to not only try the shorter GMAT format for the first time since the change, but to also try the "Quant first" order for the first time, without making a dent in my lifetime limit of 8 GMAT attempts (I only have 3 left).

Can't say that I'm going to miss writing the essay, either. ;)

Am I terrified of not being able to take physical notes? Yeah, a little bit. It's going to be a fun $200 experiment, and I will make sure to share the benefits of my experiences afterwards, with both my private students and the wider GMAT community.

FYI. I asked Souvik to address this question on the video today and ask the other participants what does shelter by the security. Well I’m not going to admit that I was wrong ;-) I could say that you may be closer to it than I am! Not sure if you watched the video today it’s about 40 minutes in.
