Dear GMAT Experts ,

I have completed all the the verbal concepts and practiced many questions sectional wise. Still I am not able to attempt complete verbal section. My speed is very slow. I am not able to manage my time due to which I get very low score in verbal section. In my last mock in last 20 minutes , I had to attempt 16 Questions including two RC's . Please guide how can I improve upon this . Need Help.

Using time markers can be helpful to keep yourself on track. This may help, for example, give you a sense of where you want to be in terms of time by question number 9 or 10.

Hi adyg14,

Many GMATers face pacing issues in the Quant section, the Verbal section or both – so you are not alone. However, it's important to remember that pacing problems do NOT exist on their own - they're the results of OTHER problems. Since most GMAT questions are written so that they can be approached in more than one way, it's likely that "your ways" of approaching the Verbal section are inefficient (re: the "long ways") - so you will have to make some fundamental changes to how you 'see' (and respond to) that section before you will be able to improve your pacing and score higher.

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

What is the accuracy in the questions you attempt?
How much time do you typically spend on each question, for different question types?
How long have you been preparing and practising? Has your speed improved at all?

I would say time every question you practice…. And cut yourself off at 2 mins. Perhaps put a timer in front of you so you can make sure you never go past the 2-2.5 min mark.

I know that a number of tutors does not recommend that you time yourself from the very beginning but that’s what I did. I made sure that whenever I attempted any questions, I wasn’t taking more than two or 2 1/2 minutes per question.

Hi adyg14

Let me share my 2 cents from my experience of scoring 740 on GMAT and helping many students reach their target score. Taking extra time to solve questions is a symptom and not the disease itself. Let me elaborate.

There are 2 things that you do while solving questions - 1. You think about how to solve the question and 2. You solve the question. It's the first point that eats up unnecessary time. Now how do you tackle Point 1. Most people think the best solution is by solving additional questions. It does help but sadly is not the most effective solution because by just practising more questions you end repeating the same mistakes.

The better solution is to learn the right logical methods to solve questions and then master these methods with additional practice. Now before suggesting you the right methods, I would like to understand how you approach questions at present and then accordingly I can suggest you what's the way out. Feel free to connect with me on a DM to discuss further.
