Hello Experts,

I have been preparing for GMAT for about 4 months now. I have not been very regular keeping up with my study schedule. I did some basic preparation and gave my first mock (GMAT Prep 1) about 2 months ago and score a 590 (V27, Q44). Then I focused more on Quant and completed all the MGMAT strategy guides and questions in MGMAT Advanced Quant. My accuracy was about 65-70% in MGMAT Advanced Quant questions.

Last week I gave my second mock -MGMAT Mock 1, and scored a 630 (V35,Q41). I made a lot of silly mistakes in Quant and panicked since I was running out of time, but still I am quite disappointed with my Quant score. I had only 4 mins 30 secs for last 8 questions in Quant and got a lot of 700-800 questions wrong in Geometry and consecutive numbers section. Verbal was okay timing wise but I had 4 RC's and my accuracy was about 40%. I understand that I have to focus on Quant and RC in the next few weeks.

I am planning to give my GMAT by end of march and my target score is 750+. I know there is a lot of work that needs to be done and therefore I am looking for suggestions on the following:

1) Should I book a date for last week of March and work towards improving my score for the next 2 months?
2) How often should I give mock tests? I have decided to take all MGMAT and GMAT prep tests.
3) I am getting a lot of Quant questions wrong while practicing under timed conditions. Any suggestions on how to improve my accuracy? (I have an engineering background and have covered most of the concepts, so I don't think that's a problem here.)
4) Any general advice on how to analyze the mock results and identify weak areas.

Thanks a lot in advance! Would really appreciate your help.

Regards,
YT770

Hi YT770,

Please find my answers below:

1) Should I book a date for last week of March and work towards improving my score for the next 2 months?
Since you have already been studying for sometime, you must be aware of the fundamentals. 2 months should be a good enough time for you to reach your score, provided you devote enough time for preparation.

2) How often should I give mock tests? I have decided to take all MGMAT and GMAT prep tests.
You should plan on giving 1 mock per week from now on and thoroughly analyse the test afterwards.
Make sure the you take the Full Length CAT including the AWA and IR

3) I am getting a lot of Quant questions wrong while practicing under timed conditions. Any suggestions on how to improve my accuracy? (I have an engineering background and have covered most of the concepts, so I don't think that's a problem here.)
Prepare an error log and analyse your mistakes. Try to drill down deeper into the subsections - PS, DS and the topics that you are facing problems with.

4) Any general advice on how to analyze the mock results and identify weak areas.
Again the same thing. Idenfify the subsections: PS, DS, SC, CR, RC and then the topics.
Drill down deep and identify your mistakes.

Note down the incorrect problems in an error log and see if you learnt anything new. if you did, put it down in your error log.
Revisit this from time to time, so that you do not make the same mistakes again.

Ok, thanks! I feel like since I don't have an exam date, I am not able to follow a study routine. I've heard MGMAT cats are tougher than actual GMAT. Is that true? What other mocks would you recommend? I have an error log but I never added the subsections. Will do that from now.

Thanks again for all the great advice! Much appreciated.

Hi YT770,

Given your practice CAT scores and your current score goal, you're going to have to make some big improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. Taking just 2 CATs over the last 4 months was NOT a good idea. You should be taking FULL-LENGTH CATs (including the Essay and IR sections) on a more frequent basis - 1 FULL CAT every week (or so)).

1) What materials have you used during your studies?
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
3) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Thankfully, 2 months of additional study time gives you plenty of time to improve. Also, since the GMAT is a predictable, standardized Test, you CAN train to score at a higher level. You might need to invest in some new resources and practice some new Tactics though.

Hello Rich,

Thanks for your response. Here are my answers:

1) What materials have you used during your studies?
I am using an online course material by IVY GMAT, Bangalore, India. Students from that institute have consistently scored 99 percentile on GMAT in the past few years.
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
Round 1 for Fall 2017 intake.
3) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
Harvard, Wharton, Kellogg, Sloan, Booth, Tuck, Columbia

I have decided to dedicate 3-4 hours on weekdays and 6-8 hours on weekends for the next 2 months. I have just started practicing using OG and Verbal Review books. Will 5 MGMAT CATS and 2 GMAT PREP be sufficient to practice for the next 7-8 weeks? Should I book my exam date after I get consistent 700+ in practice tests? Any other advice/tips?

Thanks again Rich!

Hi YT770,

To start, the claim that (all) users of a particular product consistently score the 99th percentile on the GMAT is silly - if using that one Course was all it really took to score 750+, then EVERYONE would use that Course and the average score on the GMAT would rise significantly (which it has NOT; in fact, it hasn't really changed at all in the last 10 years). This is meant to say that this particular product may or may not help you to achieve YOUR goals, so you might end up needing to invest in some additional resources.

That having been said, the CATs that you already have should be plenty for the time being. Taking a 'book-heavy' approach for the next 7-8 weeks might be problematic though. Test Takers who study in that way tend to get 'stuck' at a particular scoring level, so we'll have to see how you score during the next several Exams.

It's also worth noting that since Round 1 is over 6 months away, you could extend your studies, if needed. You can certainly choose when you want to schedule your Official GMAT, but having an Official appointment/deadline might help you to focus a bit more on the overall process.

The best a preparatory company can do is to come close to the actual GMAT, they can not replicate it.
Hence the CATs may be a bit more/less difficult than the GMAT.

You can buy two additional official mocks (Exam Pack1) from mba.com
