Hi CROMBA,

This sounds like a good plan. Starting on your own will give you a sneak peek into your weaknesses and strengths. Post which, you can address your weaknesses with the help of a tutor. On the point of wasting a CAT, I would also reiterate that there are plenty of CATs that very closely mimic the GMAT in addition to the 4 official CATs. So you should not be worried about it.

However, you should certainly take one test now to understand your current level and thoroughly analyse it. You should drill deep and try to find out the problem areas and then work on them.

Drill down deep and identify the pain areas.
Sections: Quants, Verbal
Subsection: PS, DS, SC, RC, CR
Topics covered in these sections.

However, while you are preparing on your own, make sure that you follow a reliable source to build your fundamentals.

All the best!
