I have been studying off and on for the GMAT for the last couple of years.
Late summer, I scored 640 (42Q, 38V) and 650 (39Q, 42V) on the GMATPrep exams.
Two days before the actual exam, my GF dumped me cold-turkey
. I scored 550 on the actual (32Q, 33V), ending what was a pretty dismal week. It kinda knocked the wind from my sails and left me doubting my ability.
Do people generally score in the same range as the GMATPrep? I thought I was able to concentrate effectively realize I hadn't slept properly in several days and was not in the best frame of mind.
Was looking at re-writing it in mid-January but think that I might bump it up to mid-December.

So much of your performance on the test is connected to your ability to concentrate and power through it. Sounds like you had an awful week, were distracted and sleep-deprived. All of that adds up to a less than optimal score, IMO. Typically your performance on GMATPrep is a pretty good indication of how you will do on the real thing, so I think your results on the actual test do not reflect your abilities. Give yourself a month or two to regroup, and try again.

OMG, don't doubt your ability...you were surely stressed and upset about the breakup. Definitely regroup and take it again.
And honestly, if your GF was rude enough to dump you two days before a major test like that, be glad she's no longer your GF!!!

. I was a bit disappointed as I was averaging 650 (640, 650, 660). That being said, I made at least 4 very stupid mistakes in Q alone .
