GMAT Prep : OG 10,11,12

Question

I plan to take Gmat this year. I am reading OG 12th edition along with other books. But, I frequently hear to read OG 10 and 11 also, alongwith OG12 (esp. OG 10). Could people here clarify : why such advice ? I mean, don't they overlap; and why the need of reading two editions of the same book ?

The OG 10 is something of an "old school" favorite around here. It apparently contains more questions than either the OG 11 and OG 12. The drawback with it, however, is that you have a higher chance of seeing OG 10 questions on the GMATPrep. This is unwelcome because it would inflate your score and diminish the value of the practice tests.

Bundle the OG 12 with the OG Verbal and OG Quant instead. These books are relatively easy to find as well as provide the most up-to-date questions and perhaps a higher concentration of more difficult problems. If you still want to add the OG 10, then that's probably okay. But do not add OG 11 to OG 12, as there would be many repeats. The OG 12 is basically a better version of OG 11. The OG 10 and OG 12, on the other hand, can be considered separate products.

One more thing : Does OG also progress in an adaptive manner ? I mean, easier questions at the beginning and moderate to harder afterwards ?
If yes, though not a serious bother, could experts here provide an approximate classification of the 120 odd questions based on the level of difficulty?

( say 1-40 : Easy, 41-90 : Moderate and so on. )

Yes, the OG problems are ordered according to difficulty. I'm not entirely sure of the exact breakdown and most other estimates are just that: estimates. Most are under the 700 level. Don't worry about it too much, though.

As the great Ron says: it's the takeaway that matters more and not the difficulty level of a question. "If" you can manage to takeaway something from each question in OG12 - you won't need anything else. Because most people, such as me, can't takeaway everything, they need more than the OG. But if you did it diligently, it should be sufficient.
