You are very welcome. Please let me know what you decide to do. It’s definitely trickier to study when you get older and you have a lot more responsibilities but there are ways to be more efficient and focused. After all, do you get wiser as you get older 😉

Hi Ashok,

As BB has pointed out, you might not actually need to take a Test such as the GMAT or EA to apply to School (depending on certain factors, such as the Programs that you're interested in). Thus, the logical first step might be to put together a list of the Schools/Programs that you're interested in and determine what the requirements are to apply. The Admissions' Offices at most Programs will also be happy to answer any questions that you might have, so you should feel free to contact the Schools directly and ask.

1) Are you planning to apply later on this year (for the Round 1 or Round 2 application deadlines)?
2) Have you put together a list of Schools/Programs yet (and if you have, then what Programs are on your list?)?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Dear Experts,

I am contemplating on going back to University to pursue an MBA/Executive MBA after a long gap! I took my masters in 1985 and
my purpose of taking GMAT is not for seeking better position at corporate level but rather for personal growth and to take my business to the next level.
In addition, I am passionate about creating platform to bring in some positive changes to the people around me and do feel the need for a credential to boost my confidence level. All these years I could not consider this dream of mine due to responsibilities but now the time has arrived to take on a new adventure since my son has moved on to first year university!

Could some of you please guide me with a suitable strategy to prepare for the GMAT?. I am keeping aside 6 months to prepare from scratch.
It would also be beneficial if I could join some prep course as well. Also, I read somewhere it is hard for people over 50 to score high in GMAT? Is it realistic to aim for a score of 600-650?
Your suggestions would be highly appreciated
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Ashok

Hi Ashok,

Start by taking an official mock to analyze your current level. Once you do that, note down your weak areas and start studying the concepts and the methodology of each topic. Only after you are done with these two, you have to move to practicing questions. GMAT is not a typical test in which just the conceptual knowledge is tested. It tests your application skills along with the conceptual knowledge. So, without learning the right methodology to solve questions, no matter how many questions you practice, your score will most likely remain stagnant. Make sure to focus more on the methodology during your preparation.

The right way to prepare for GMAT:

You can go through the articles below to understand the right way to prepare for GMAT.

How to start your GMAT Preparation?

How to effectively plan your studies for GMAT?

How to score 700+ on GMAT

I would suggest you to choose a resource which can help you with:

  • Concepts
  • Methodology (Most important)
  • Standard questions
  • Their detailed solutions
  • Study plan

As you are a working professional, choose a course which can provide you a study plan as well. This way, you don't have to worry about what to study on any given day. The best thing to do would be to check out the free trials of the online courses out there and choose the one which suits you the most. But make sure you choose the one which can help you with the above factors. You can check out the below article to know more about the factors to consider while evaluating an online course.

Key factors to consider while evaluating an online course

And I would suggest you to check out the free trial of GMATWhiz before taking a decision. It provides you with a personalized study plan which is integrated with the course.

And to give you a specific study plan, I would like to know more about you. We could get in touch over a call and have a detailed discussion on the same. You can use the below link to get in touch with me.

HI Shivamukthy,

Very cool that you are interested in getting an MBA at this stage of your life. Regarding the GMAT, I agree with much of what has been said. For starters, get a list of desired programs and confirm whether the GMAT is necessary. If you end up having to take it, then please reach back out, and I’d be happy to help.
