Hi everyone,
Thanks for you help in recent months, while I was preparing for the GMAT. I took it on Wednesday and scored a 580 (40Q/28V), which was lower than the lower 600s that I was seeing on my practice exams. I'm obviously disappointed, but I found the exam quite harder than any of the practice exams that I took. I feel that I could have prepared a little bit better for the AWA portion, but I think I would have found the quant part hard regardless.
The school that I hope to get into requires a 550, and while I know that my 580 would be acceptable, I know that it isn't a competitive score. I do have a strong GPA, as the school only looks at the final 20 courses, and although I have 8 left to complete, my GPA for the other 12 courses is 3.9 out of 4.0.
I really don't want to take the exam again, and am hoping that my 580 with my high GPA will be acceptable. Any thoughts on whether or not I should retake it?

In this case there are two questions to ask yourself:
Do I need to retake?
Could I improve my score?
On the first you say that a 550 is acceptable so I would say there is not any need to retake, but from your past results it does seem that you can improve (were these taken with essays?). A higher score will give you more options in terms of which school to go to. But remember that in many cases the GMAT is just a filter, so if you are set on going to the 550 school then I see no reason to retake, especially as you have no desire to at present.

By "acceptable", I mean that it does meet the required score for my school of choice. I did take my later exams with essays, but I did find the actual GMAT a lot harder. I'm not sure that I could do better if I tried it again, and I'm not sure that I have the stamina right now to take it again. I am going back to school for my final year in a couple of weeks, so that would complicate retaking it as well. I have contacted the school to get some clarification on how much weight the GMAT has in the application process...
