Hi Chewy,

Based on everything that you've described, there are enough 'little things' in how you prepared that likely hurt your performance on Test Day. Thankfully, none of them is individually all that difficult to 'fix', so you could easily retest in a month or so and hit your score goals. Here are the immediate issues that stand out:

1) You spent just 6 weeks of total study (with that big 'break' in the middle) on the process. Many Test Takers spend 3 months (or more) on their studies to hit their 'peak' scores, so it's likely that you just have not spent enough time studying.

2) Taking 3 CATs in the 4 days leading up to your Official GMAT was NOT a good idea. You likely experienced some 'burn out' before Test Day. From here on, you should take no more than 1 FULL CAT per week.

3) The GMAT is a specific 'event' that you CAN train for, but taking your CATs at home and retaking CATs are NOT realistic choices (relative to what you'll experience on Test Day). The more you deviate from the Official GMAT 'event' during your practice, the more likely your scores are to be 'inflated.'

Have you scheduled your next GMAT yet?

Hey Rich,

Thanks for your suggestions. I will take these pointers into consideration when gearing up for my next GMAT.

I haven't yet booked a rewrite but will likely take the test towards the end of September. Getting back into studying this week.

HI Chewy,

What study resources did you use during your original studies and what resources are you planning to work with for your next attempt at the GMAT?

Hi Rich,

I have been using Manhattan, the Official Guide (with Quant and Verbal Review) and GMAT Club material for my studies.

Hi Chewy,

A 660 is closer to a 700+ than you might realize. Given what you described about Test Day (and how you started of the Quant section with some errors and maybe hit a couple of 'hiccups' in the Verbal), you might just have had a bit of a 'bad day.'

That having been said, most of the questions that you'll see in the early part of the Quant section will NOT be that difficult, so you might need to work on your 'mechanics' (note-taking, organization, calculations, etc.) and your tactics to make sure that those errors do NOT happen again. At this 'level', the 'precision' in your work will be a big factor in whether you're getting the question correct or not.

Based on the resources that you've listed, how comfortable are you with TESTing VALUES, TESTing THE ANSWERS and using Number Properties during the Quant section?

Hey Rich,

Thanks again for your reply. I understand that I am close, and my confidence has returned. Today I am getting back into studying and am going to give this test everything i've got. I ordered the advanced score report yesterday to see where exactly I faltered on my test and my intuition after the exam was pretty bang on.

Verbal: (V38)
CR - 91st percentile
RC - 51st percentile
SC - 85th percentile

I knew I blew the RC. I had three really long passages and got flustered, didn't get a good grasp on the complex topics being discussed and was guessing on some of the questions. After looking over the detailed analysis provided by GMAT Prep, I have now realized that my RC grade varies quite significantly and is often the "make or break" on my verbal score. I think I really need to work on digesting concepts foreign to me (sciences, history and gender related passaged). My top verbal scores are always when my RC is 85 percentile + and is when I understand the topic being discussed (economics, business related).

I think this will be a big focus area of mine moving forward. I will also mix in some SC topics that I am still a bit shaky on as well as Describe the Argument CR questions which usually give me trouble.

Quant: (Q44)
PS - 67th percentile
DS - 49th percentile
Arithmetic - 66th percentile
Algebra/Geometry - 51st percentile

This quant breakdown is similar to the majority of my GMAT Prep tests. Although these scores are lower than I have generally scored in practice, the breakdown between PS/DS and Arithmetic/Algebra is consistent. Clearly I need to work on my Algebra/DS skills moving forward. I just wish I knew which types of questions are grouped into the two broader buckets.

To answer your questions, I do not use testing values all that often and usually prefer to work with the formulas given and try to rearrange them to get to the answer. I am not entirely sure what TESTing the ANSWERS means but I do regularly jump straight to the answers and go through them to determine whether or not they are correct. Number properties one of the topics that I enjoy the most and I do feel like I am decent at primes, factoring etc.

Let me know what you think! GMAT booked for Sept. 24th.

Hi Chewy,

I asked about those specific Quant tactics because having those skills will help you to pick up the missing Quant points that you're looking for. With a Q44, you're probably really good at the straight-forward 'math' questions that you face, but you're missing out on a LOT of 'strategy-based' points, especially in DS. Since many Business Schools place a higher value on a high Quant Scaled Score (than on a high Verbal Scaled Score), you could help your Overall profile in a number of areas by picking up those Quant points.

Based on everything that you've described, I think that you would find the EMPOWERgmat Quant Score Booster to be quite helpful. Most of our clients complete that Study Plan in under a month, so it should fit with your schedule. We have a variety of free resources on our site (www.empowergmat.com), so you can 'test out' the Course before setting up an account.

If you have any additional questions, then you can feel free to contact me directly.
