Hi ykgmat522,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) In the final 2 weeks before your Exam, how many hours did you study each week?
2) What class did you take? Did you use any other CATs/mocks besides the 6 Official ones?

Goals:
3) What is your overall goal score?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

If you took your Official GMAT at a Test Center, then you might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

ykgmat522 - you have not logged in since posting this... 🤷‍♂️😵
Did you figure out what you planning to do?

I also saw something you mentioned - studying in the evening after the job. As long as you do that, you will not get a great score. Why do you give your best time to your job? It is totally fine to do that but your brain can do only so much work until it bails and if you choose to use it at the end of the day, then you choose to not prioritize it.

Hi

I prepared for 3 months for the GMAT starting from June 5. I appeared for my exam on September 5. I was doing this with a 10-6 job. But I had enough time in the evening to prepare, approx 3 hours. I took a 15 day off before the exam and devoted all my time to mocks.

I joined one on one classes and for the first two months, I worked on the concepts. I practiced various levels of questions from each topic in Quant. Likewise with Verbal, I practiced topic-wise and then did a mixed bag of questions from OG19.

Towards the end of the second month, I practiced half of Quant and Data Sufficiency from OG20. In the last month, I gave 10 sectional mocks each. I agree, I did not evaluate these well. However, when I gave the GMATPrep mocks (I gave 6) I scored an average of 590-600.

I did not understand some topics in quant and for the full-length mocks, I also prepared and worked with an Error Log after someone from this portal suggested the same. In verbal, I was not sure about the Critical Reasoning section as I had not practiced it enough, however, I was confident about RC and SC.

I scored only a 540 on the actual exam. I was not anxious because I am generally good at taking exams even when I am not prepared. The exam center was peaceful so that did not impact my performance either. Unlike during mocks, I did not face any time crunch in the Quant section and apparently thought that it was going well. This is why I was able to perform better in Verbal in the main exam. However, I am devastated as I cannot understand where I went wrong.

My scores:

Scaled Score Percentile
IR 5 47
Quant 35 20
Verbal 30 56
Total 540 31

I want to retake the exam and am hoping that people here can give me some guidance about how I should go about this.

Thanks a lot for taking out the time to help.
