I am contemplating taking the exam again and wanted to reach out to this community for feedback. After taking the test three painful times, i scored a 680 today (50 quant/31 verbal). Im lookin to apply to hbs, chicago, wharton, and columbia second round (early january). Given the score and time constraint, does it make sense to retake? My understanding is that admission officers will give greater weight to the math score, which may make the 680 sufficient. What are your thoughts?

The rule of thumb is to invest your time into what gives the greatest ROI.
On the GMAT, it is probably as good as it gets (after 3 times that is) 680 happens to be slightly agove the lower border of the 80th percentile of the schools you are targeting.
If this was your first attempt, I would recommend going for another one without any studying - chances are you will get 30 more points for nothing but after 3 times I would hate to waste you another $250 and 720 with OK essays is much worse than 680 with great essays.
So, here would be my suggestion:
1. Focus fully on the applications and essays - work extra hard on these
2. Order GMAT Roadmap book from MGMAT and then spend 1-2 hrs browsing it to see if you can find any Aha's. If you do, and they make you feel that you may have a good shot, you may want to schedule a 4th round. If nothing jumps out, keep working on the applications. (by the way, I just finished reading and wrote a review on the Your MBA Game plan book - recommend it)
