I too am an accountant and my first CAT was a rude awakening as well. I knew what the question was asking of me and I knew that at one point of my life I would have been able to solve it. I had forgotten how to divide fractions ... how to do mental math... Getting off the calculator was difficult. However my score was not terrible, 530 Q31... not stellar but heck... I have not done this math since college. After a month with the Kaplan premier book my score boosted 70 points... I am taking a Manhattan course now and I am confident that my score will go up.

One thing that I noticed during my Kaplan studying was that out of the questions I got wrong 80% were computation errors. So I went online and printed out multiplication, addition, subtraction and division worksheets... 3rd grade level ... I do one of each daily and am gaining speed and accuracy.

I appreciate you (wallstreetbarbie) sharing your experience. I will definitely have to hit the books hard before attempting the real GMAT test. Good luck!

Do not be discouraged... you are ahead of the game by realizing that our jobs do not help with the math skills required for the GMAT. Give it a month honest effort and I promise you will see results. Remember it is only high school math!

Good news is that accounting does help the verbal... especially if you spend any time reading those pesky FASB statements :-D

I hope you're right about the verbal part. All I know is that those FASB statements sure are some dry reading and qualify as sleeping materials! Thanks for the kind words of encouragement. Best wishes!

I was a CPA who had not taken any math courses (except one stat class) since high school when I started studying. You are just going to have to work that much harder, but it is very feasible to get a great score on the test. Don't be worried about your background. The math on the test isn't really complex, it is just tested in tricky ways that often combine seemingly disparate concepts. Follow all the advice on this forum and you will do well, no matter what your background is.
