Dear experts:
On the mba.com website, does this "You may retake the exam:…No more than eight times total" mean that, in total I can retake the test 8 times after my first attempt, so a total of 9 times, or is it 8?
And, on the kaplan website https://www.kaptest.co.uk/gmat/faq#tfaq20, is it true that after the 5th test in 12-month period, You can request to GMAC in writing if you want to take it more than that, but applications are only considered after you have actually taken the 5th test.?

The current policy is that you can take the Official GMAT no more than 8 TOTAL times (with no more than 5 attempts in any 12-month period of time). You may petition GMAC and ask for a 9th attempt - and under certain circumstances, that request may be granted (but that is not too likely to happen). I've never heard of anyone requesting a 6th attempt in a 12-month period, but I suppose under specific and special circumstances, GMAC might grant that request.
It's worth noting that if you are not close to your Score Goal, then taking the Official GMAT many times is NOT a 'solution' to that issue. Your Official GMAT Score will help to define your skills, strengths and weaknesses - when you take the Official GMAT under exact Testing conditions. To significantly improve on an Official Score, you have to train to face those same conditions in a more effective fashion. That involves far more than just learning how to answer GMAT questions - you have to learn how to maximize your performance mentally, physically and psychologically by training in a specific fashion.
