rich,

All these factors that you mentioned weren't significant contributors because I normally took the entire test with all the sections except a couple of times when I missed writing Essay.
also my exam stamina also developed to quite a good level because of taking multiple practice tests.

kyle,

I'm good at googling and found out that I'm one of those rarest cases who get such huge drop in the score. I even reported the issue to GMAC customer Care but only to get back a reply that everything was fine with the software and tht's my real score :(

To my dismay I choose top schools as 5 free options( Harvard,Wharton,ISB,IIMA and LBS) to send my score. Now with 470 they must be laughing rolling on the floor

One unusual thing I found in my verbal was that I got 5 RC passages! something around 17-18 questions! It looked to be never ending saga of trying to finish these passages on time. it was a little task to finish verbal on time due to 1 long passage that came around 33rd question. Never before I faced 15+ RC questions in a test! out of those 5 I think 2 were super complex passages which ate good amount of time.

As for Quant,I also saw Probability,Permutation and statistics questions somewhere around 16th question on Quant ...

Don't worry about sending a low score over. They only look to verify your self reported score on your application. They get tons of these reports.

My advice is to not get discouraged and prep yourself for another exam soon.

Wow. My phone messed up and didn't let me finish. Treat this last exam as a freak accident and work hard as though you are trying to get from the low 600s into the high 600s. Then check back after a few practice exams to see how you are doing.

If your score is very different from all your practice tests, and you felt you performed normally on test day (not tired, sick, stressed), then there are normally two explanations for an unusually low score: either you made a couple of careless errors on easy questions without realizing it (that could hurt your score a lot), or you have an uneven foundation, as Kyle mentioned above - if you're unable to answer easy questions in a particular quant topic, then on some tests, just by 'bad luck', the test will give you easy questions in that topic, and your score will be low if you get those wrong. On other tests, you won't get those easy questions in that area, and your score will be much higher.

Assuming your GMATPrep scores are a fair reflection of your ability, it's extremely likely if you repeat the test that you'll get a dramatically higher score, even with no preparation at all. But it would be better still to try to identify the reason for your low score, and work to improve in that area. If you're making careless errors sometimes, that's likely something you will have noticed during your preparation, and that will be a very important area to work on (there are quite a few expert posts you might read about fixing careless mistakes if you think that's an issue for you). If instead there is a mathematical topic you're weak at, then you should focus on improving your level in that topic before doing anything else.

If you were consistently scoring in the mid-600s to 700+ range on practice tests, you'll be able to do that on test day as well. So keep a positive attitude, focus on improving what you can improve, and just forget about this one test - you must have had very bad luck on test day for one reason or another, and it's very unlikely you'll be so unlucky again.

Hi ashishchandra80,

The GMAT is really good at giving Test Takers the scores that they have EARNED. It's possible that you just had a really 'bad day' on Test Day, but that's not something that can be diagnosed and "fixed." The real cause of your score drop is probably a combination of factors, but until you really 'nitpick' all of the details in how you studied (and in how you faced Test Day itself), you should not go back in to retest.

I'm happy to help you figure all of this out, but you have to provide enough information to let me do so.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich
