GMAT score and Schools in Europe

Question

Hi Everyone,

I want to apply to a MSc in Europe, but couldn't find much information about it so far. 
This is a short profile:

- Brazilian, Male, 22 years old (soon 23)
- Graduated on top 15 universities in Brazil (Business Management)
- GPA 3.1/3.2 (81/100)
- 1,5 years of internship in the biggest private company in brazil
- 0,5 year of internship in a startup acelarated by one of the most well know Business Aceletators in Brazil.
- Speak English, Spanish and Portuguese (two expiriences abroad to improve the languages)
- TOEFL IBt: Will take it in a week (From 95-105)

***However, GMAT: 540 38Q/ 26V

I know that MSc are not as hard to get in as MBA programs. But I should have a score higher than 600. What should I do? My profile is interesting, but GMAT is holding me back.

** Note: My GMAT score range is very broad on Gmat Mocks: Quant 38 - 46 / Verbal 26 - 34

Hi Leo!

I have contacted Rotterdam for myself and they said that GMAT score muts be 600 or higher. However, during a GMAT course I took here in Holland, there was a classmate that had been told by the admission board that he could be admitted with a bit lower grade (I don't remember which grade it was, 550 or so) because he had a really interesting profile with more than 8 years of work experience. You don't have so much experience, but perhaps it would be worth it to try, since your GPA looks good.

thanks for replying!

I contacted them as well and as it seems, the score must be higher than 600 (And to be very competitive, I think it should be more than 630). They can only make exceptions in very special cases. Since I'm far away from having 8 years of work experience, I probably won't be a special case. I will retake GMAT in a month from now and hopefully will reach the 600+ zone.

Are you applying for a MSc in Rotterdam as well?

Update! My TOEFL score was 102 with all sections 24+.

I intent to retake the GMAT on Dec 7. 
Should I start to write my motivation letters and etc. or simply focus on studying for the GMAT exam?
As I said in a previous post, some of the universities I'm applying to do not require GMAT.

Try focusing on extra curriculars.
Also, a lot of MiM programs want recent undergraduates with little to no experience. Since you already have 2 years worth of experience, do email the schools asking them if your profile fits.

Guys for applying to a good MiM program, GMAT is just part of the puzzle. Most of the MiM schools in the TOP 10 have a median GMAT score of around 690-710. So a good GMAT is ofcourse essential for an admit. I would say a GMAT of 680+ is optimal for which ever school you are targeting. Though in any case if your GMAT score is lower & you would like to proceed with the application, there are a number of other things the the schools look at while making the admit or ding decision. The most important ones are as follows: 1) Well the MiM is marketed as a degree for people with no or relatively little work experience, but from what i have experienced most of the international students who come for the degree have at least a year or more of work ex, this sometimes goes up to 3 years in some cases. What you have to understand is that once we do a MiM we do not plan to do an MBA, the course is almost the same and you get a pretty good push in your career. So coming back to the question a little work experience is a plus, may it be internships or a full time job. If you have worked for big companies the brand name helps,if not then also fear not as it all depends on how you explain the job you did and how interesting you can make it.( I worked as a electrical engineer for an Indian construction material manufacturing company, so i have some experience of polishing credentials up

2) Your academic background matters! Most schools want an ideal mix of engineers, economic, arts etc students so if you have a different background it helps, as it adds diversity to the whole school mix and scores them good points on the international ranking scene. Here your nationality can also help, especially if you are from one of those countries from which there are relatively lower number of students studying abroad. 3) Your academics play a decent role, a high CGPA shows that you are a consistent performer, but i know many people who have lower CGPA's but still score an admit. So it depends on how you explain your marks and if you have a viable alibi for lower grades. Also colleges know how hard it is to score top grades in certain UG colleges of the world, so they accordingly scale the marks and evaluate you. So no worries about that. 4) Extra curricular , well this is something i believe really helped me gain an admit in many colleges, and is something schools are very favorable about. They love people who are different and have done something which makes them stand out from the crowd. It may be related to sports( a national level archer), school associations ( president of some XYZ association), an interesting hobby( completed a course in handwriting analysis), Volunteering work etc. So i hope you get the point. Well all these things have to be clearly explained to the school admission committee in your Resume and your Essays. As i said before, many people think that having a GMAT score is enough, but that's just the tip of the ice berg and is only one of the first screening techniques used by schools. An excellent, creative and well written essay or set of essays which showcase your talents is absolutely necessary! Only by looking good on paper, do you have a chance to be called for an interview and then actually explain all that you have already written about. A Letter of Recommendation is also very important as it acts as a 3rd person certification of your exploits and gives the admission panel a view of your character from the eyes of somebody else. A lot of people don't give the LOR due attention and send half a page, poorly written LORs, this can be a strong cause for the demise of their application. So a well written LOR clearly explaining your strengths and describing experiences is absolutely essential. and yes of course you have to ace the interview too
