Hi everyone,
I am considering applying to several top 10 MBA programs in the future (H/S/W, Booth, Kellogg, Tuck, Columbia) with a background in Finance. I previously scored a 720 on the GMAT (Q46, V42, IR 6, AWA 6), and I took the GMAT again with an unofficial score of 710 (Q48, V40, IR 8, AWA pending). Would you recommend that I cancel the 710, try to submit both scores to adcoms, or actually submit the 710 because it is more balanced?

Hello, polarbear2020. The total score is the one that matters, the one that is reported by schools in their class profiles, so I would stick with the 720. That is too bad about ditching the perfect IR, but that section never really gained traction in admissions, and a 6 is fine enough not to stand out in any negative way. (Even a 5 would have been fine.) If you are shooting for a top 10 program, then every 10 points in that total score will get you that much closer.

First off, both the 720 and 710 are outstanding Scores, so you can comfortably apply to any Business Schools that interest you. Finance Programs tend to put a greater emphasis on an Applicant's Quant Scaled Score, so your 710/Q48 would likely be better for you than the 720/Q46 - but there are lots of factors to consider when it comes to applying to highly-competitive Programs. You're ultimately asking Admissions questions, so you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:
