Hi oct6454,

It sounds like you've put some real thought into your overall plans and timeline - that type of forward-thinking makes me think that you'll have a great chance to hit all of your goals.

Many Test Takers find that they have to adapt their study plans depending on how well they improve on the various Quant and Verbal concepts/Tactics, so you can begin with a 3:2 ratio if you like, but you'll probably end up changing that at some point.

My suggestion is that you study however you see fit for the next 2 weeks, then take another FULL-LENGTH CAT. Based on those results, we'll have a better sense of how well you can study on your own and whether any immediate changes should be made or not.

Okay, thank you very much for the advice. I will report back in two weeks with my next score (will be Manhattan again) for comparisons sake and we can go from there.

My most worrisome section is quant, so I'm hoping I can find some improvement in those two weeks.

Thank you dabral. I have taken the advice given and am currently studying Quant on Mon/Wed/Friday and Verbal on Tue/Thur. I will go onto the GMAT site and download those tools. When you talk about doing the question problems, should I take Friday to work solely on practice problems from the official GMAT?

I'm having a difficult time figuring when I should go over official GMAT practice problems. Right now, I'm simply working through the Manhatten books 2 chapters a day (Sometimes only 1), this usually takes up 2hrs of time because I go through the chapter until I'm 100% confident in what I learned.

Yesterday I took my second practice CAT. This was the full length version including IR.

I did not do as I had hoped. I scored a 530, so ten points less then my first "completely cold" CAT.
The troubling part of my 2nd CAT was the breakdown of scores.

Quant: 29 20%
Verbal: 35 76%

This was taken after 2 weeks of studying. I completed both the critical reasoning guide and the FDP Guide. While taking the second CAT, I do know that I missed problems types I studied within thee FDP guide. Math is obviously my glaring weakness and something that I need to fix ASAP. Where do I go from here?

Back for another update on my progress over the first month of my study.

As stated, before I began this journey by scoring a 540. That was not what I had hoped, but that's just the way life is sometimes.

After my initial practice test I studied for two weeks before retaking. My second attempt I scored a 530...needless to say I was very dissapointed with my results. Clearly math was my weakpoint as I scored Q:29 V:35. To remedy this situation I went ahead and purchase the Foundations to GMAT math, retesting again one week later, scoring a Q39V31. I had a meeting to attend to I had to rush through the Verbal section, leaving me with a mere 61% enough to net me a 580.

Just yesterday I took my 4th CAT and scored a 590(Q37,V34). Again, not what I was hoping for, but at least I improved. Upon reviewing my score, specifically in the Quant section, I realize how many dumb mistakes I make from going too fast. I have been attempting to slow down, but clearly I could still use some improvement as I finished with 20mins to spare.

My last realization came in the Verbal section: after finishing all verbal books except for SC, which I am currently working through, I am beginning to wonder if the SC book is doing me more harm then good as I begin to question myself on many of the SC questions....Just some food for thought.

The plan is to study for another two weeks, finishing the foundations book ,at which point I will retest again and see where I stand.

Hi oct6454,

Now that you've studied for about 6 weeks, and taken several practice CATs, it looks like your scores all revolve around 550 or so. GMAC has publicly stated that a Test Taker's Official Score is within +-30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in how your CATs function, this means that you've performed roughly the same way on all of your CATs (+- a few points).

You still have about 2 months to study, which is good. Since you're still about 100 points away from your score goal though, It might be time to think about investing in some additional resources and make the BIG gains that you're looking for.

Rich,

I am beginning to think the same thing...

Right now my plan is to study, as I have been doing for another 2 weeks and re-take a full length CAT. If my scores have not improved further Say 620, then I will move towards some other medium for learning quant as that is my greatest struggle right now.

Hi oct6454,

Your short-term plan makes sense. Just one small point though - you should take a NEW CAT (not re-take one that you've already used).
