Hi gautam124,

From your post, it sounds as though you're just starting out. Is that true? Have you done any studying so far?

If you're just beginning, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can access 2 for free from www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a bit of practice first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the general content and question types first, then that's fine - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can discuss the results and how you might best proceed with your studies.

I'd also like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) Are you planning to take the At-home GMAT or are you planning to take your GMAT at a Test Facility?
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

Have you given an Official Mock yet? It may help to know where you current stand in terms of Verbal and Quant..

Hi OnlineTutorKnight,

I am yet to give a mock. but I did appear in real GMAT 5 years back and had scores of 650 (47Q/34V) and 600 (35Q/38V). I am yet to take the mock as to day I stand at zero and thinking of brushing it up before taking or not.

Hi, I am targeting Score around 750 and frankly would require that score to stand out. I have only 3 -3.5 months with daily 2 hrs and 8 hrs on weekends. I have OG, Manhattan Prep 6th edition and PowerScore CR Bible and am familiar with test structure etc. However, sheer volume of pages in the study material is overwhelming as I feel I need to study smart. I am not much willing to take a paid test prep. I am relatively better in and comfortable with Verbal rather than quants. Please suggest as whether I need to master these full volumes of Guide or any smarter study plan amd resources are available? Also, I am not much convinced on reading math books rather than practicing questions. How can I achieve my score and with what best resources free (well mostly).

Hi Gautam,

If you are overwhelmed with the huge number of resources, then better go with an online course which can provide you all the content on a single platform. There's no way you can reach a score of 750 without being patient. You have to learn the right methods and apply them during the process of solving questions. It takes huge patience and persistence to stick with the right methods and solve questions.

So, I suggest you to first choose the right resource, make a proper study plan, and then start preparing. You can get in touch with me using the below link to have a detailed discussion regarding the same.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for responding.I took real GMAT 5 years back and had scores of 650 (47Q/34V) and 600 (35Q/38V). I am yet to take the mock as to day I stand at zero and pondering to choose between doing it without revising concepts or after. As regards taking GMAT online, I am not averse, but would prefer it at center. Regarding B schools, I will cross that bridge when it comes after this one. I wish to focus one at a time.

Regards,
gautam124

Hi gautam124,

Since you are just starting out with your prep, I have a few helpful articles for you.

How to Start Studying for the GMAT: 5 Steps for Success

How to Score a 700+ on the GMAT — A Mini Guide for Success

If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out.

Good luck!

Hi Scott,

Kindly accept my apologies to responding so late to your so early response. I didn't want to respond to you before reading the links you so gracefully provided. Thanks for letting me come across such beautifully written, practical and brutally honest detailed account of what a common GMAT aspirant comes across and what should be avoided. I don't consider myself a total novice but as someone who does do a lot of silly mistakes and I must admit quants have been my quintessential foe. The points you take out are really really helpful. I feel that choosing right material is 33% of test prep. But yes, your articles have made me think harder on what can be my approach.

Warm Regards,

MY problem is that whether I still need to go through Manhattan Books if I join a course; or I can dispense with online coaching and Manhattan Books + GMAT Club shall be sufficient?

Hi gautam124,

You don't have to rely on too many resources. Just stick to one good standard resource which can help you with everything. And if an online course can help you learn better and finish your prep sooner, then you don't have to worry about the other resources. After all, a resource has to help you crack GMAT and help you reach your target score.

Either of the above approaches would work Gautam:

i) Join a course (in which case, you would just invest your faith/trust in the material that the course provides. So, no extra books)

ii) Manhattan Books + GMAT Club

Whichever way you go, commit yourself to it. 750 that you're targeting, does not come easy. It requires significant effort and determination. It appears you had a 650 few years back. Going from a 650 to 750 is also quite daunting, though achievable with complete focus.

Good luck!
