Hello Guys, I am finding it really tough to crack moderate and tough cr and sc qns in under 3 mins and could'nt solve a rc in under 12 or 11 mins. Has anyone been there and improved ?
Also, I m faltering out on close to 4-5 SC questions purely because of idiomatic constructs. Has anyone been there and tackled this ?

kindly post your valuable suggestions

Hi shahul,

I would advice you to first learn the methodology and then practice a few questions without any time limit. Once you are confident about the methodology, you can start taking timed quizzes to improve your timing. I have elaborated the process in detail in the following debrief. I hope you find it helpful.

Hi Shahul,

Struggling with timing is just a symptom. The actual problem lies somewhere else. There might be many ways to approach a particular question. But there's only one best way to solve it under the optimum time. As GMAT has a time constraint, you need to make sure to use the best methodology to solve questions. As you are struggling with all the modules, let me explain each one by one.

The right methodology to solve SC questions:

The most common way students solve SC questions is using grammar stand-point. But GMAT SC questions don't test your grammatical knowledge. They test your ability to convey a logical meaning without any ambiguity. You might have often come across answer choices which are grammatically correct and convey a logical meaning but are indeed incorrect. So, it is important to identify the intended meaning of the original sentence, identify errors if any and then eliminate answer choices which are grammatically incorrect or which do not convey the intended meaning.

The right methodology to solve CR questions:

The right way to solve CR questions is to
  • Read the argument
  • Understand the premise and the conclusion
  • Pre-think the missing link
  • Eliminate answer choices which do not match your pre-thought assumption

Identifying the conclusion helps you understand the scope of the argument, which in turn helps you eliminate answer choices which are irrelevant or out of scope. And to pre-think in an effective way, you need to understand the 4 frameworks on which most of the CR questions are framed.

The right methodology to solve RC questions

If you currently focusing on details while reading the passage, then I would suggest you not to do that. The focus should be on identifying the purpose of the passage. So, you need to read the passages from an inferential manner and get involved in the passage. Make a mental note of each para after reading it and derive the main point by summarizing the summaries of individual paragraphs.

How to practice the right methodology?

The best way to learn the right methodology is to practice it on a few questions without any time limit. Once you solve the questions, spend considerable time on analyzing the solutions. Make sure to analyze the solutions even if you get the question right. Once you feel confident about the methodology, you can start taking timed quizzes.

Hope it helped. Feel free to get in touch over a call if you have any more queries.
