Hi everyone,
This review is for those aiming to hit the 580-650 mark while working full-time at a consulting firm or any other employer who demands a lot from your "personal" time. My background: undergrad in Accountancy, and professional certification as a Chartered Accountant. English is my second language (Fluent).
In Montreal, my target schools (JMSB and McGill) have historically considered scores above 550. Considering the time I had, I aimed for a 600.
My study materials:
The official GMAT verbal review 2015 and quantitative review 2015. I did not read or practice the official GMAT guide 2015. I practiced with 600 problems and debriefed each problem for about 1-3 minutes.
No extra books, no guides, no seminars.
Study sessions:
My studying pattern was largely inconsistent due to my demanding work schedule. I would squeeze in 40 practice questions occasionally 2-3 times a week over a span of 2 months in the early mornings or late evenings. I did not take anytime off.
Overall I would say my studying was certainly under 100 hours (to be conservative).
Tip 1: Learn from your mistakes and assess your weakness. My weakness was the quantitative section. If I had taken 3 weeks off to study, I am certain I would have enough time to care about nailing this section.
Tip 2: Don't waste your $ on live seminars or buying extra books. I know people who took time off, attended seminars and bought extra books, and they did not do so well. Practice!
If you want to nail the GMAT, I would imagine all the extra guides and practice problems will boost your score. If you were like me and writing the GMAT aiming for 600 to 650, the above strategy should be sufficient for a full-time employee.
Conclusion: I got accepted into my program, best of luck to others.
