I got this one last night too. Pick any prime number. Start with 2 to make it easy. 1 is less than 2 and has no other factor in common with 2 than 1. Pick another prime, just to be sure - let's say 5. Positive integers less than 5 are 4 3 2 1. Luckily for us, the very first answer choice is the correct one - just plug in the prime values you chose. If p is 2, then p-1 is 1, which is in fact the number of positive integers less than 2 that has no other factor in common with 2 than 1. If p is 5, p-1 is 4, and once again, that's the correct # of positive integers less than that prime and having no other factor in common with it than 1.
If p is prime, by definition the only numbers that divide it are 1 and itself. Hence all numbers before p are coprime with p, of which there are p-1 of them.
