Goals question

Hi,

I am in a dilemma with regards to my post MBA sort term goal:

1. Initially, I had written the goals statement straight from my heart (as everyone suggests) - I want to be a Management Consultant for a top consulting strategy firm with a focus on Energy sector (I have worked in Energy throughout my career, and want to transition to MC).

2. But then I realized that no that the top firms hire only for generalist roles, and allow their employees to find their niche in due course of time.

3. So I changed it to  plain jane  Management Consulting. But this doesn't sound too specific. Though there are some transferable skills that I can speak about, but not very relevant to my past experience.

My question is: When the question asks about my short term goal: Can I mention 2 short goals: Either MC with a top firm OR Business Development/ Strategy in Energy industry. This makes my goals look more credible. They are specific goals, yet shows my flexibility.

Your views on this.

Hey there kunzi, You can without a problem get specific about which industry you want to specialize in, especially if it is relevant to your past or your future goals. Yes, consultant companies hire "plain jane" consultants, but consultants do end up specializing often enough in one industry or another, so it would only be to your advantage to be more specific. What you should NOT do EVER is mention TWO goals. All it does is make it seem like you don't know what you want. Your second choice of goal (Bus Dev in Energy) is honestly just as good as Consulting in energy, and you can choose whichever one floats your boat.

Hi Jon,

Thank you for the reply. However, I have the following issues:

If I state that I wish to get into Energy Consulting (or Consulting with a focus on Energy industry), the companies that I can target with this goal are very few, and hence make this goal seem a little difficult to achieve.

On the contrary, if I state that I wish to do consulting in Energy for any of the top strategy firms like MBB, it seems that my goal is unachievable as these firms hire for generalist roles.

I can always explain it during the interviews, but how should I address this in my essays?

Hey dude,
This is not really so much of an "issue" that you need to address it in your essays, and I still think you can go with either. Energy consulting jobs aren't thaaaaaat rare, and even if the regaular consulting firms hire regular consultants you can always write something like "I plan on specializing in Energy" and no one will question that, nor does it need any further explanation (although yes, do be prepared to explain should you be asked about it in the interview)
