Hi Kunal,

I'm sorry to hear about how things went with your GMAT. I'm happy to provide some advice but would first like to learn more about what is going on. Once you respond to the questions asked, I can provide some advice.

Hi All,

I prepared for GMAT for almost 1 year and gave a online test in January 2021 but sadly got 560 only. I am so dejected and I really don't know how should I proceed. I git Q44 and V23. I really don't know if I would ever be able to make it. Could anyone please tell me what should be my course of action.

I would really appreciate if anyone can help me with valuable suggestions.

Thanks
Kunal

Hi Kunal,

Sorry about how things went with your GMAT. You can definitely improve your score provided that you identify what went wrong in the previous attempt and work on your weak areas. Having said that, what were your mock scores? Were they aligned to your actual GMAT score or is there a huge difference?

Looking at your score, it seems that you are struggling with the application of concepts. If you have focused more on practicing questions, then I am afraid that's not the right way to prepare for GMAT. The main focus while preparing for GMAT would be to learn the right methodology to solve questions because GMAT tests your application skills along with the conceptual knowledge. The better your application skills are, the better your performance will be.

Having said that, to suggest you a specific study plan, I would need a few more details such as the way you prepared for GMAT till now, your weak areas and the approach you use to solve questions. This information will help me understand your concerns and guide you in a better way. If you have an ESR, that would be helpful to give us a few more insights. We can get in touch over a call and have a detailed discussion on what went wrong and on the plan of action. You can use the below link to get in touch with me.

Hi Kunni,

I am sorry that your scores were not at par with your expectations. However, it is not the time to give up hope yet. I am sharing a couple of success stories of students who were at your current score once and then went on to achieve their target score. I hope these inspire you.

1. Mudit (560 to 700)
2. Hirel (570 to 750)

Coming to what you should do next, with the limited information in this post it is difficult to share a plan. Please elaborate on your preparation, challenges you faced during preparation and on the test day and your target score. Send an email to us on [email protected] with this information so that we can guide you further.

Regards,
Aditee

Clearly Verbal proved to be your undoing Kunal.

How have you been preparing and how much were you scoring in official mocks?

Hi Kunal,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day did not turn out better. Before we can discuss how you might best proceed with your studies though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) What type of study routine did you follow over the last year? How many hours did you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

If you took your GMAT at a Test Center, then you might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

Studies:
1) What type of study routine did you follow over the last year? How many hours did you typically study each week?

Every day I used to practice several questions, but in the exam, I was entirely clueless in Quant. I practiced hundreds of questions from SC, CR, Quant especially Probababilty but in the exam, I was clueless. I used to study almost 25-30 hours a week.

2) What study materials have you used so far?

For Quant, I prepared from @TargetTestPrep and for Verbal I prepared from @E-GMAT. After completing the course from TTP and E-GMAT, I started practicing questions from the Official GMAT guide and GMAT Club. Majorly, those were from the GMAT club.

3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

550 - June 2020
580 - July 2020
710 - Oct 2020
720 - Dec 2020

At times, I used to pause the test if I forgot any formula. This is one more mistake I did.

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?

I want to get a 700+ score.

5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

I am planning for Schulich School of Business, Desautels Faculty of Management, University of British Columbia, HEC Paris, or INSEAD.

Sorry, I took an online test.
