In general it's a good idea to have a general idea of how the algorithm works so you can adjust your timing / skipping strategy to it. It can be hard to do, but don't get bogged down trying to precisely understand the algorithm -- it's nearly impossible for someone outside the GMAC to master it.
Just keep the key algorithm friendly strategies is mind:
1. Don't leave any questions unanswered.
2. Don't deliberately (ie skip/guess) multiple questions in a row
3. Try to get the first couple of questions right to get earlier access to more difficult questions.
In general, if you get the first few hard questions you get right -- it'll take a lot of mistakes in a row to get knocked you back down to a lower score range. So focus on consistent test taking processes that prevent getting questions wrong in a sequence.
