Hi, which of the following is correct (or preferred) way, and are they both correct?
1. After they advertised, sales increased by 25%.
2. After they HAD advertised, sales increased by 25%.

Do u have the whole sentence? If just like that, i think 2 is preferred... coz past perfect needs some indication of action happened for a period in the past i guess...
In this case at a point sales increased, perhaps some advertisement had been done further in the past to this point...

After they HAD advertised, sales increased by 25%.
Be careful, the use of "after" already defines a sequence of event.
After (event1) , (event2) = It is obvious that event1 happened before event2.
To use "past perfect" to force again the seqeunce is a redundancy for me.
So I think,
After they advertised, sales increased by 25%. => Better.
