The pool of math concepts involved in GMAT Quant is similar to the pool of concepts involved in GRE Quant. So, in preparing for GRE Quant, your friend has been learning the foundations of the math involved in GMAT quant.
That said, to master GMAT Quant, your friend will have to do some additional preparation because GMAT DS questions are different in format from any type of GRE Quant question and because GMAT Quant questions in general tend to work a little differently from GRE Quant questions.
