Ramachandra Sundaralingam – A Super Hero

Yesterday, we had one of the most interesting and charismatic leader sharing his experiences. An international drugs expert, he has served 185 member countries for 17 years. He was granted European citizenship for his extraordinary service to the international police community.

Mr. Ramachandra was here @ Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai to give us a presentation on the war against drugs, money laundering and on several other topics. He spoke about the dangers associated with drug addiction and how India as a country is becoming a slave to Drug criminality. The plight and fate of some of the undeveloped countries and their exposure to drug trafficking was stressed on and Mr Ramachandra factually stated that 80% of the cocaine is produced in Columbia and 80% of heroin is from Afghanistan. He pointed out two role models who has affected the present day youth – Sachin Tendulkar and Osama Bin Laden. A 14 year old in Afghanistan finds refuge in AK-47 aspires to become Osama and a 14 year old in India with a cricket bat in his hand dreams of becoming Sachin one day.

He finished by saying “The drug war must be won in the class room and not in the court room. India is a great country, has great traditions and a lot of family values. We should embrace our culture and not fall prey to drug abuse”.

5th July each year marks the Founder’s day for Great Lakes Institute of Management as well as the birthday of our very own Dr. Bala. V. Balachandran (Founder and Dean- Great Lakes). At 74, Uncle Bala, as he is fondly called is one of the most dynamic personalities who not only had a vision to provide world – class management education in India but also to place Chennai on the International Education Front. A Padmashri Award recipient and J. L. Kellogg Distinguished Professor of Accounting and Information Management at the Kellogg School of Management, Uncle Bala left us spell bound with a talk on his journey of success.
Great Lakes Founder’s Day, a day to celebrate the bygone milestones and sow new dreams, was welcomed with pomp and cheer across the campus. A powerful speech and the cake cutting ceremony by Uncle Bala followed a lavish feast organized for the students. I must say today was indeed a quick breather amidst the rigorous classes. By evening, dressed in our best outfits, all of us were excited for the upcoming cultural performances that created an atmosphere of rhythmic drumbeats, dances, rap and an entertaining mimicry organized by the fellow Great Lakers. Finally, the hoopla reached its pinnacle with the set off of the much awaited DJ night that continued till midnight. This day will surely linger in every Spartans' (as our batch is called) mind for days to come.
Within the last few years, we have emerged as one of India’s premium Bschool, providing an experience to the students. I am proud to have associated with Dr. Bala and Great Lakes Institute of Management. :)

Re: Great Lakes Institute of Management, India - Class of 2013 [#permalink]
Article provided by Avani Mittal of her visit to Ms. Hillary Clinton's speech at Chennai on 20th July 2011-

As we, the students of Great Lakes Institute of Management, started on our journey to Anna Centenary Library on 20th July 2011, we could not ask for more. The 30 of us were super thrilled about the prospect of being addressed by none other than U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, the epitome of beauty and brains!

The Anna Centenary Library building was beaming with energy. Thrilled by the maiden visit of Hillary Clinton to Chennai, the reporters and press from media, local audience and chief officers assembled in large numbers to a be a part of the event. As we waited for Hillary to arrive, the influx of celebrities from film and music industry such as Kamal Hassan, along with opinion-makers such as Gauthami kept the gathering mostly comprising of students engaged. Among others, Cognizant’s R Chandrashekhar, Apollo Hospital’s Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, Founder and Dean of Great Lakes Institute of Management, Bala Balachandran, were also present.

The welcome address by Mr.P.A.Naresh, Joint Director of Public Libraries, Tamil Nadu preceded the speech by Ms Hillary Clinton. Ms Clinton started with "Vanakkam", her vernacular greeting provoking a roar of approval from her audience. She expressed her happiness about coming to Tamil Nadu and Chennai and praised the Tamil culture and history. The US Secretary of State paid tribute to India, its democracy and its pluralism.

She reiterated US’ support for India becoming a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council in a reformed UN system. Touching upon the Sri Lankan Tamils’ issue, she asserted every citizen of the island nation deserved equal help and opportunity. Additionally, she emphasized that India and US should work together to combat piracy, mitigate climate issues, achieve nuclear non-proliferation and enhance sustainable development. Towards the end, she desired a free, global world where peoples’ aspirations are not buried due to boundary restrictions.

The audience were mesmerised by her demeanor and presentation. However, a void was felt, due the absence of an interactive session. Pranita Dhamdhere of Great Lakes responded, “Her reference to silk route- the ancient trading passage between India and China was something that stood for me. She stressed on its relevance for tomorrow’s India, a silk route stretching from India in all directions. I also appreciate her focus on importance of women empowerment in India, if it wants to grow in the real sense.”

Vikram Choudhary pursuing PGPM at Great Lakes shared, “It was an exhilarating experience to be an audience to such an eminent and learned personality. India becoming a superpower was something I had always read about, but receiving it from such world leaders shows that our invincibility is inevitable.”

In short, the trip was a memorable one. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for us which we shall cherish forever.

Today we had with us, R.Gopalakrishnan, director of Tata Sons, chairman of Rallis India and Advinus Therapeutics, and vice chairman of Tata Chemicals. He spoke in length about "Learning what's not taught & How to use it to build your career". He also spoke about Leadership and how "Affectionate Leader" need not be an oxymoron. He ended his speech by saying "Don't waste your life doing things you don't enjoy!!".

Hello,

I understand that GLIM takes into account CAT/XAT/GMAT scores. Considering that the intake is just 300, is there any quota for getting admits in GLIM based on the exam you have taken.. like 100 admits for each GMAT/CAT and XAT ?

What is the ideal GMAT score required to apply and get an admit ? What are the further rounds after applying?

Would be helpful if you can throw some light on the admission process..

Thanks for the help.
