Re: Group 6 Question 28: A new law requires that treadmills used... [#permalink]

A new law requires that treadmills used in private homes, as opposed to in health clubs, need to be equipped with an alarm button that can be used to call for help if the user is sick or hurt. Fitplus, a company that manufacturers treadmills, has decided to equip all of their new treadmills with an alarm button even though the company sells treadmills only to health clubs.

Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the decision made by Fitplus?

(A) Fitplus sells a wide range of athletic equipment directly to home users. Incorrect

it cant explain why change all of their new treadmills

(B) Equipping treadmills with an alarm button is relatively inexpensive for treadmill manufacturers. Incorrect

may be alarm button is inexpensive but it increase cost

(C) The owners of Fitplus are aware that health clubs that buy their equipment often eventually sell it to private individuals to use in their homes. Correct

most of their treadmills indirectly buy home users, so they change all of their new treadmills

(D) Health club owners are aware of the new law requiring that home treadmills have an alarm button. Incorrect

Health club owners concern is irrelevant

(E) The new law came about after the occurrence of a number of well-publicized treadmill accidents by individuals using the equipment at home. Irrelevant

I have one doubt here ..

Even though C looks convincing , but it should be noted that in C , it has been mentioned that "health clubs who buy there equipment" .. It should not be a concern for Fitplus whether health clubs keep those with themselves or sell it to the private homes . They are only selling it to the health clubs and that should be there only concern .It won't eventually come to Fitplus for breaking the law ( or say not broken at all) .Then why to install new button in the treadmill ??

Re: Group 6 Question 28: A new law requires that treadmills used... [#permalink]
If the company doesnot put the alarm buttons, health clubs which eventually sell the equipment to individuals cannot sell to these individuals. Then health clubs may change to another supplier company which supports alarm buttons. So if the Fitplus company provides alarm buttons, their sales go smoothly or even may increase. If the company does not supply , then health clubs may not buy equipment form the company Fitplus

Given:
A new law requires that treadmills used in private homes, need to be equipped with an alarm button that can be used to call for help if the user is sick or hurt.

What Fitplus did:
Decided to equip all of their new treadmills with an alarm button even though the company sells treadmills only to health clubs.

Possible Reasons:
If Fitplus sells treadmills only to health clubs, why does it need to equip all machine with an alarm button ?

There are couple of reasons that might sound like a possible reason

1) The company believes that the machines that the company sells to health clubs will land in homes for private use eventually.
2) The company believe that soon there will be a new law mandating that that treadmills used in health club need to have alarm button.
3) The company plans to start selling treadmills to homes.

Now the points 2 and 3 above though possible , there is no information given in the question to support these claims and hence both these are just our assumptions. Only option 1 looks like a reasonable logic here.

Lets look at the options now

(A) Fitplus sells a wide range of athletic equipment directly to home users. - Okay, but this does not give information about why alarm button is installed for treadmills sold to health clubs - Incorrect

(B) Equipping treadmills with an alarm button is relatively inexpensive for treadmill manufacturers - Again, though this might be true, this information is of no use for us - Incorrect.

(C) The owners of Fitplus are aware that health clubs that buy their equipment often eventually sell it to private individuals to use in their homes - This aligns with our logic we had discussed above. Also i like the info that "owners are aware" in this option, so its a decision made based on information owners already know. This option looks logical, lets keep it for now - Correct

(D) Health club owners are aware of the new law requiring that home treadmills have an alarm button - Lets agree that health club owners are aware of the new law, but no info on relation between buying a treadmill with alarm button and private treadmill owners need a treadmill with alarm button. Incorrect

(E) The new law came about after the occurrence of a number of well-publicized treadmill accidents by individuals using the equipment at home - Okay, this gives us background information about why the law came into effect, but does not answer the reason behind company's decision - Incorrect.

Option C is our answer.

Ans: C

Great explanation akadiyan! Kudos to you for breaking down each option and your thought process throughout! :)

Official Explanation:

A new law requires that treadmills used in private homes, as opposed to in health clubs, need to be equipped with an alarm button that can be used to call for help if the user is sick or hurt. Fitplus, a company that manufacturers treadmills, has decided to equip all of their new treadmills with an alarm button even though the company sells treadmills only to health clubs.

Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the decision made by Fitplus?

(A) Fitplus sells a wide range of athletic equipment directly to home users.
(B) Equipping treadmills with an alarm button is relatively inexpensive for treadmill manufacturers.
(C) The owners of Fitplus are aware that health clubs that buy their equipment often eventually sell it to private individuals to use in their homes.
(D) Health club owners are aware of the new law requiring that home treadmills have an alarm button.
(E) The new law came about after the occurrence of a number of well-publicized treadmill accidents by individuals using the equipment at home.

Question Type: Strengthen
Boil It Down: Treadmills used in private homes now must have alarms. Fitplus put the alarms on their treadmills, even though they don’t make treadmills for private homes.
Goal: Find the option that best explains WHY Fitplus put in the alarms, even though they are not required to do so.

Analysis:
The question asks for a piece of evidence that would strengthen the conclusion.

Conclusion: Fitplus has decided to equip their treadmills with an alarm button even though they sell treadmills only to health clubs, not private individuals.

Evidence: None is provided.

For the conclusion to hold, there must be some reason that equipping the treadmills with the alarm is a good decision. If Fitplus knows that health clubs make money by selling old treadmills to individuals who will, by law, need alarms, then it makes sense to equip the treadmills with the alarm.

(A) Fitplus sells a wide range of athletic equipment directly to home users.
This is irrelevant since the question is only about treadmills. If it’s not about treadmills, it’s out of the scope of the argument.

(B) Equipping treadmills with an alarm button is relatively inexpensive for treadmill manufacturers.
This does not give a clear reason for adding the alarms. It might be a relatively inexpensive process, but why add the button at all if it costs money to do so?

(C) The owners of Fitplus are aware that health clubs that buy their equipment often eventually sell it to private individuals to use in their homes.
This is the correct choice. A treadmill with the alarm button would likely help the club sell the equipment later on, offsetting the cost of the equipment to the club.

(D) Health club owners are aware of the new law requiring that home treadmills have an alarm button.
This does not lead to the conclusion. Even if the owners of the clubs are aware of the law, why would they choose to equip their equipment with the button if they aren’t required to? The correct choice explains why.

(E) The new law came about after the occurrence of a number of well-publicized treadmill accidents by individuals using the equipment at home.
This only refers to home use; it does not explain why Fitplus would add the alarm to the club equipment. It only explains why the new law was put in place.
