Hi experts,
I finally breached the 700 barrier (according to the original GMAT) and scored a 685 (Q88 V82 DI82) on my third attempt of GMAT and my first attempt of GMAT Focus. I am now looking to apply for the deferred MBA program of Columbia Business School.
Given my background is somewhat over represented (Indian, Male, Non-IT), I am thinking about retaking the GMAT to get atleast a 705, which, in my opinion, would further enhance my candidacy. However, I am not so sure about this decision and would love to have some experts' opinions regarding the same.
Also, since my GMAT Focus date was 29th March (1:00 pm IST slot) and GMAC says that one can retake the exam after 16 calendar days, it puts my reattempt date to 14th April. The only issue is that the deadline for the Columbia Business School Deferred Program is 15th April. So I have 2 queries pertaining to this-
1. Does the "16 calendar days" aspect mean that if I took the exam on 29th March at 1:00 pm, I can give my reattempt after 1:00 pm on 14th April. Or does this mean that I can give the reattempt anytime after 15th April, inclusive?
2. Since the official score report takes 3-5 days to arrive and it takes 8 hours post acceptance for the scores to reach the target schools, my scores would be available to the admission committee after the deadline passes. Would this be a problem?

Hi lessgoogmat,
Congratulations on the 685! That's a very, very good score.
1. A higher GMAT score is always better, so yes, a 705/705+ would help. Just how much it would help is a different matter, though, as you already have a 685, which is similar to a 730/740 on the old GMAT. For what it's worth, I recommend that you go for it, but do prioritise the other aspects of your application if you think you don't have enough time to do everything you need to for both your applications and your GMAT.
There's a lot of scaremongering about GMAT scores, and much of it is simply absurd, at least in my opinion. Simply put, I don't think you need to take the exam again, but you could give it a shot if you don't mind the cost (time and money).
2. The easiest way to check this is to try booking a new appointment on mba.com. The system (usually) won't let you book an appointment that breaks any of the limits. If you want to be absolutely sure, call Pearson customer support up.
3. As long as you took your GMAT before the deadline, you're good. There's no need to worry about when the database access will be made available to your target program(s).

If you do decide to retake, for Verbal CR, consider checking out Manhattan-Prep's 6th Edition for Critical Reasoning. For RC, becoming familiar with how inference questions work could be helpful as well. Regarding the application deadline, it might be worth reaching out to CBS to ask what type of flexibility may be provided. Perhaps they allow you to "update" your score by a certain date which will give you room to squeeze a further attempt as well.
