H-1B Update: What Int’l Students Need to Know
Bottom line
If you’re an international MBA student planning to stay in the U.S. and convert your F-1 to H-1B without leaving the country, the $100K fee may not bite you. But if you’ll be starting from abroad or your employer files you overseas, the cost really matters. Make sure you discuss details with your future employer and immigration advisor now because small misunderstandings could become major headaches later.

- What changed?
On September 19, 2025, the Donald J. Trump administration signed a proclamation requiring a $100,000 fee for new H-1B visa petitions filed after 12:01 a.m. ET on September 21, 2025. - Who is affected?
- The new fee applies primarily to new petitions for foreign nationals outside the U.S..
- Those already in the U.S. on H-1B, or current holders switching status (e.g., from F-1 to H-1B) are exempt from this fee.
- Why it matters for MBA students / International grads
- If you’re studying in the U.S. on an F-1 visa and plan to transition to H-1B, you won’t pay the $100K fee (if you file from within the U.S.). That’s a relief.
- But if your employer files you via consular processing abroad, or you’re outside the U.S., this fee may apply, making the H-1B route significantly more costly.
- What to consider / do next
- Confirm with your employer or sponsor: “Will my petition be filed via change-of-status (within U.S.) or consular processing (abroad)?”
- If you’re outside the U.S., or expecting to travel, check travel timing. Some firms have advised H-1B holders to avoid international travel amid uncertainty.
- For those still choosing MBA programs or job offers: factor in employer size, petition location, and whether you’ll be eligible for the fee-exemption route.
- Stay updated: this policy is new and may face legal challenges or clarifications. Keeping tabs on official enforcement and your employer’s immigration strategy is key.

It would be great to keep this topic updated as it is mind-blowing with all the changes going on.
This is potentially a very positive development that the $100K applies only to candidates who are coming from abroad and the MBA grads are not impacted - this will help free up the space and maybe even not require a lottery. This would make MBA and Masters degrees more valuable!

This is a relief for MBA applicants who are already in the US on F1 and looking for a change of visa.
The bigger concern is how the visa rules are changing abruptly, with zero concern for the families of legit employees who've sacrificed so much to make US their home.
