You're right to be focused on identifying exactly what went wrong. You need specifics not the general topic performance data in the ESR. Given you were practice testing at 700 level, it's probably a problem with your test taking skills (ie. the process you follow to answer each question type in quant and verbal).

We use a live testing session with a GMAT performance coach to identify your specific testing taking skill gaps. I'd recommend looking for something similar with a tutor who focuses on retake score improvements. We're happy to help if you need another option.

The ESR may be worth checking out. If you share it here (after wiping any personal info), people may provide some specific suggestions as well. In case time management was an issue, using question/time markers may be helpful. For Verbal, if you feel your fundamentals are solid, consider working on your solving approach. May boost your score a bit. Had a 6-hour student for example who went from a V31 to a V40 in about 30 days. Perhaps work with a study buddy who is strong on Verbal. There's a study buddy thread on gmatclub you could check out.

Hi doomsdayverbal,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) Did you use any other study materials besides the course that you listed? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
4) What Schools are you planning to apply to and what specific application deadlines are you facing?

Since you took your Official GMAT at a Test Center, then you might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

Thanks for your response,
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
I started around 2-3 months ago. (I had prepared initially 2 years ago but discontinued so didnt really start from 0, I had some Idea) and I prepared for about 4-5 hrs each day and 8+ on weekends

2) Did you use any other study materials besides the course that you listed? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
No just the TTP one and GMAT club every now and then. I have used the official gmat practice test, Expert globals

3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

1st mock: GMAT official test 1: 29th sep' - 680 (V34 Q49)
2nd mock: Experts global free test 1: 9th Oct' - 720 (V39 Q49)
3rd mock: Manhattan prep: 14th Oct' 23 - 630 (V32 Q44)
4th mock: GMAT official test 2: 18th Oct' 23 - 700 (V35 Q50) - I took my test 2 days after this

4) What Schools are you planning to apply to and what specific application deadlines are you facing?
I am planning to apply for the top 10 business schools most of these schools have their deadlines in the first week of Jan and one other school - ISB - that has its deadline on 3rd Dec (this will be close)

Hi doomsdayverbal,

To start, since you are interested in applying to some highly-competitive Schools, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement (and the more time that you have to act on that advice, the better). There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/ask-admissio ... tants-124/

I've also sent you a PM with some additional questions.

Consider checking out Manhattan-Prep's 6th Edition for CR. For RC, becoming familiar with how inference questions work could be helpful as well.

Hi doomsdayverbal,

Based on how you were doing on your practice test, I agree that you should have scored higher on your actual GMAT. With that in mind, here are a few helpful articles you can check out.

Hey Scott,
Thanks for your response.

Yes, I did see these pitfalls while I was using the study materials from TTP (some great stuff there), but I didn't follow them all so its kind of a refresher now. Thanks for that.

Do you also think it is possible that one could get a V31 after getting 7 counted questions wrong (got this from the ESR) out of the 30 in Verbal? It seems kinda fishy
Progression in verbal 7/8, 4/7, 5/7, 7/8 --> I agree that 3 wrongs in the second quarter can be crucial but so crucial that the score could drop to V31?
