I think the word "regular" in question - "who do not drink regular coffee with cream" changes the meaning and should not be there.

Hanks Manufacturing recently conducted a survey of its employees. The results showed that of the n people who work at the company, 1/3 drink decaffeinated coffee, and the remainder drink regular coffee. Of those who do not drink decaf, 2/5 add cream to their coffee. Which of the expressions below accurately represents the number of employees who do not drink regular coffee with cream.

A. 2n/3
B. n/8
C. 4n/15
D. 11n/15
E. 13n/15

i believe it's D.
it said that 2/5*2/3n do drink Regular+Cream.

2/5*2/3= 4/15

so the rest (1-4/15) do not drink R+C which equals to 11/15

The question is fine.

Decaffeinated coffee = 1/3
Regular coffee = 2/3

"Of those who do not drink decaf, 2/5 add cream to their coffee."
means 'of the regular drinkers, i.e. of the 2/3, 2/5 add cream'
Regular coffee drinkers who add cream = 2/5 * 2/3 = 4/15

The fraction that drinks 'regular coffee with cream' = 4/15
The fraction that does not drink 'regular coffee with cream' is the rest = 1 - 4/15 = 11/15
Number of people = 11n/15

thank you Karishma

I was reading this line "do not drink regular" to be decaf - and hence we need to find the employees drinking decaf with cream.

hi karishma,

Decaffeinated coffee = 1/3
Regular coffee = 2/3

"Of those who do not drink decaf, 2/5 add cream to their coffee."
means 'of the regular drinkers, i.e. of the 2/3, 2/5 add cream' that means 3/5 0f 2/3 don't add cream.
And the answer becomes = 3/5(2/3)= 2/5n

wats wrong with this approach?

thanks,

I agree with the others as the question is asking for the # of DECAF coffee drinkers who don't use cream. Since the stem doesn't provide enough information, I would think you cannot determine. Is my thought process making sense?

hi karishma,

Decaffeinated coffee = 1/3
Regular coffee = 2/3

"Of those who do not drink decaf, 2/5 add cream to their coffee."
means 'of the regular drinkers, i.e. of the 2/3, 2/5 add cream' that means 3/5 0f 2/3 don't add cream.

Hey Kartik,

My question about your approach is that the stem doesn't say that 2/5 of the total# surveyed but only accounts for the regular coffee drinkers. then how is this helping you answer the question about the 1/3 decaf drinkers? Just curious

Your approach is correct for one part of the answer.

Of the regular coffee drinkers, 3/5 do not add cream so we get that (2/5)n drink regular coffee without cream. But is this the fraction they are looking for?
They are looking for 'the number of employees who do not drink 'regular coffee with cream.'
i.e. the number of employee who drink either 'decaf' or 'regular coffee without cream' or 'some other non-regular coffee' or 'no coffee'.
We are looking for people who do not drink 'regular coffee with cream'.

The question tells us that there are no people who drink 'some other non-regular coffee' or 'no coffee'.
You calculated that no. of people who drink 'regular coffee without cream' = (2/5)n
No of people who drink decaf = (1/3)n

No of people who do not drink 'regular coffee with cream' = (1/3)n + (2/5)n = (11/15)n
