Hannah covers half of the distance between her house and office at 6 miles per hour and covers the rest of the distance at 10 miles per hour. What is the average speed, in miles per hour, of the entire journey?
A. 7.5
B. 8
C. 8.5
D. 9
E. 9.5
We will solve this question with two approaches. Approach 2 help to increase your speed.
Approach 1: Formula based
Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time
Let distance b/w house and office = LCM of two given speeds = LCM(6,10) = 30 miles
Total distance of the going and coming back = 60 miles
Time to cover 30 miles with a speed of 6 miles per hour will take 5 hours
Time to cover 30 miles with a speed of 10 miles per hour will take 3 hours
Total time of the journey = 8 hours
Average Speed = 60/8 = 7.5 miles per hour
Approach 2:Average speed is less than the average of the given numbers Average of the given numbers = (6+10)/2 = 8
Average speed of the journey < 8
Options A is only less than 8
A is correct
