Howdy folks,
I've decided to apply for MBA programs, entering in 2013--so I have some time. I think I know where my strengths and weaknesses are, but I'd appreciate any insight y'all could offer. I have roughly eight months to kick things into an even higher gear, and I'm genuinely super eager for the opportunity this application process offers.
Basic demographic info: 24, white American male
Educational Background: History BA from a top-20 school. 3.4 GPA, 3.7 in major, graduated in 3 years. Apartment was wrecked during Hurricane Ike, so that semester's GPA is significantly lower than the others, but I don't think I'd include that in an application. 750 GMAT (47/47/6). Taking online CS classes via Stanford.
Work experience: Just left after two years at a Bay Area VC-funded startup in a heavy analytics and design role. Employee #25 (200~ employees Promoted a few times, moved among departments frequently. Very high performance numbers. Initial inquiries into the job market were positive, so I'm taking a month off to find another small startup where I can learn aggressively and get some serious work done.
Prior to that, a year in publishing and theater nonprofits (writer). I also teach writing classes to kids in the Bay Area. Spent a semester teaching social studies to kids in inner-city Philadelphia.
Extracurriculars: I funded/founded a citizen journalism project in Palestine! It's super fun. We're getting published, fingers crossed, by a major publisher next year (currently in discussion). Wrote and photographed a travelogue that hit The Atlantic and even got me a few death threats. Also a freelance photographer and I'm spending some time learning how to develop some neat, useful browser apps.
Short/Long term goals: Short-term: MBA would offer me significant professional and personal development. I'm comfortable in business development and analytics in the Bay Area startup space, but would be amenable to change. Additionally, I hope to use an MBA network to make developing future extracurricular projects, like the Palestinian journalism initiative, easier, more potent, and more effectual.
Long-term goal: teach middle school in an inner city by age 45. Everything until then is a sandbox to build things that do personal and public good.
Schools: Stanford & Haas, initially.
Uniqueness: Very broad but strong skillset--won national writing awards, photos published in nationally recognized and prestigious publications, crack VBA/SQL/design/quant analysis skills, relentless and sincere pursuit of professional and personal development.
Recommendations: I have colleagues from most of the top MBA programs, so I'd probably get a letter from my direct supervisor and whichever pal attended the school to which I'm applying.
Whaddya think? Too sentimental?
