Hi,
I am hardcore analog/RF design engineer who, after working in the semiconductors field for 9 years, is thinking of pursuing MBA from HBS or some other top Business school (preferably in US).
My querry is, will top B-school like to take a guy like me who have had no previous experience in management.
After completing B.Tech, I worked for 5 years in two big US-based semiconductors companies, in India.I then worked in a startup in Germany for two years and then moved to England and working here since last 2-years. All the companies who hired me sponsored my work-permit but my skill-set has always been in analog(VLSI) design.
But, now, I feel to reach some really important position and that too not in long future but sooner, I need to have a MBA degree in my pocket that too from a reputed college (else it is not worth leaving my sufficiently-paying job which also is enjoying enough). I'll like to have people's opinion about my prospects at top schools.

As an engineer, you probably have just a good as shot as anyone else getting into school. I am also in semiconductors on the digital side and was able to get into top schools. Whether you can get into Harvard or not I don't know. I am going to guess that you have a masters in EE since you work in analog and that you are about 31-32ish. You have 3 things working against you in getting into HBS. Harvard, I hear, prefers the younger types in general, you are also applying from a demographic that has heavy competition, and finally its Harvard it is just hard in general to get into. I definitely think it is possible for you to get into a top school though as long as you get a good GMAT score, have good grades at your previous schools, and have some decent extra circular.
I think the thing to ask yourself is why you want an MBA? Its a huge investment especially that deep in your engineering career. If you feel you need one just so you can move into management, I am not sure that I would get one. Tons of engineers work there way up through the company and never have MBA's. None of the director level positions at my company hold an MBA. Before you run off to apply to harvard or some other schools, remember getting into a school is a huge time investment, and then actually going threw a program is an even larger time investment. That being said, not having a business program will not hold you back. Many people come into the programs with little or no management experience. That is why most schools have a core set of classes people are required to take.

Thanks a lot for your reply. Actually, I completed my B.Tech in 2002 and I am 30-yrs old. I do know that I can get very good recommendation from my ex-employers in Germany and also from my present employers.
Well, the thing is that I feel, even of I am quite good at my job, I don't have a Masters degree and that will start becoming a handicap in near future. So, a Masters is something I need, I feel. Instead of investing my time just to get a Masters, I feel, MBA will give me a bigger leap. That was my though-process.
If I say that all I can ensure is a good GMAT score and good recommendations from my employers and I had cumulative grade of 8.1/10 in undergrad, but not any extra-curriular activity to boast of, can I fancy my chances at top B-schools?
