HBS essay question has remained unchanged for the past few years, this deceivably simple and open-ended question is in reality highly challenging:
As we review your application, what more would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy for the Harvard Business School MBA program?
There is no word limit for this question. We think you know what guidance we're going to give here. Don't overthink, over craft and overwrite. Just answer the question in clear language that those of us who don't know your world can understand.
The goal of this essay is to allow for AdComs to know you on a personal level (outside of the professional and academic achievements you’ve already described in your application) and gain insight into what drives you and what you stand for.
To approach this question, think about the formative experiences and relationships that have shaped you into the person you are today. There is no right or wrong when it comes to anecdotes or stories you choose to feature as long as they express your values and how you made a difference in the lives of others. You must also ensure that they bring into light the following qualities in you:
- Leadership skills: these can be expressed either through professional, academic or extra-curricular activities.
- Engagement: HBS is looking for applicants that will positively contribute to the program by enhancing the experience of their classmates... and later stay involved with the school as an alumnus. As such, is important that you convey your strong interest in contributing the wellbeing of the HBS community and broadly speaking to the business world as a leader.
- Analytical Skills: Your ability to process, analyze and discuss complex information is key “Our case and field-based methods of learning depend upon the active participation of prepared students who can assess, analyze, and act upon complex information within often-ambiguous contexts.” Make sure you share a few instances where your analytical skills enabled you to successfully solve a problem.
Pitfalls you should avoid:
- Paraphrasing your resume or other any other material submitted with your application. Having said that, it’s perfectly acceptable to use a data point in your application to give additional background info or put it into perspective.
- Not being specific enough, AdComs will know right away when your essay is a copy/past from another school essay. Be very specific when to comes to your choice of pursuing an MBA at HBS (identify courses, faculty, student organizations or conferences that you feel might prepare you best for your post MBA plans).
- Too short or too long, although the prompt does mention that there is no word limit, we believe that most HBS successful essays remain within the 700-1000 words limit
