I have a low GMAT score of 680(Q49,V34, 5.5) but a relatively good GRE score of 1470 given 2 yrs ago.
I know I am hoping against hope here, but if this is happening then ...great!

I have also heard
universities accept pre application without looking at your GMAT score. Then they decide upon how good you are and ask you to get a 700+ or something 
...so if you dont already have it, you give it a shot.... if you get it, they accept you !
Does anyone (again!) know of any school which does that???
I am really desperate to get into a top school.
Seniors, wise folks please respond!

Yes, a few schools are accepting the GRE in place of the GMAT. Stanford, for example, notes that it will make an exception for the GRE.
"As such, we require every applicant to submit results of the GMAT. (We will make an exception for alternatives such as the GRE. Contact the MBA Admissions Office for more information)."
